• Mona’s hands shook as she switched to a new phone and called Fred right away. "What do you mean by that? Luke and Rue are gone? Didn't you keep an eye on them all the time? How can they be gone? What do you mean by "missing"?” She asked Fred a lot of questions all at once, and he didn't know where to start.
• All he could do was groan. He could see that Miss Hunt was worried about the two kids, and now that they were gone, how could she not break down?
• Fred, who felt helpless, told the police what had happened to the kids. That day, they were due to attend piano lessons, but Rue suddenly announced she didn't feel well before the class started. The nanny quickly called the family doctor, but when she got back, the kids were gone. They had turned the whole mansion upside down, but they couldn't find any signs of them.
