Chapter 1 Midnight Attack
- Joseph’s p.o.v.
- The sirens sounds in the middle of the night, I jump out of bed and grab the shorts by the door
- I pull them on before I open the door and almost run into Herold, just like me he got woken up by the sirens.
- “South Border.” Sounds through the mind-link and I run after Inti down the stairs, out of the back of the Pack-house.
- I can hear every lock in the Pack-house, indicating that the windows are getting closed and locked.
- Griffin forces the shift, the moment we reach the border and while he is concentrated on our enemies, I keep my eyes on our surroundings. It has saved a few lives in the past and it has given us some valuable information in the past.
- The first Wolf lunges for Griffin, but he just steps aside and slams his head into the Wolf’s side. Griffin has learned a lot from Pappi and it has proven its worth over the years, we even taught our Warriors that wanted to learn.
- Griffin has already taken down three Wolves, when I see a Wolf sneaking through the bushes to my left and I link the Warriors that are still in hiding behind us.
- They will take care of the Idiot and the moment I get informed that he is dead, I see the panicked look in their eyes. Griffin releases a roar and they all turn on their heel to run back to where they came from.
- Herold holds out shorts for me and Inti, both of us shift to pull the shorts on and go in search of the Wolf that snuck into our territory.
- “Alpha, I believe that this is an Alpha or an Alpha’s Son.” One of our Warriors says and I know I have seen this male before.
- This is the third attack this month and I fear it will become more in the future, this is just the beginning.
- We have been running Little Crescent Pack for a little over five years now and other than a kidnapping attempt every once in a while, we have had it easy compared to other Packs.
- Our first few months at Little Crescent Pack went by in a blur, we had so many things to do and hardly enough time in a day to accomplish it.
- We had been running the Pack for about six months, when we got attacked for the first time. We lost one Warrior that night, but our attackers lost at least seven Warriors and who knows how many died of their injuries later on.
- Our borders were protected in many different ways and it didn’t matter how they tried to cross our borders, we would know it the second they came to close to our borders.
- Every Pack-member was asked to think about alternative ways to protect our unmated females, we wanted to make sure we did everything we could to keep them safe and we are still grateful for the Omega that spoke up that day.
- We moved every unmated female into the Pack-house, small tents were placed around the Pack-house for mated couples. Unmated males moved into the cottages that surrounded the Pack-house.
- Border patrol was run by male Warriors, our female Warriors were on patrol around the Pack-house. We couldn’t risk anyone getting their hands on a female, unmated or mated.
- After that first attack, others followed but there was no pattern to them and I believe that in most cases it were different Packs that attacked us.
- These attacks have shown me that other Packs are getting desperate, they will stop at nothing to get a female for the males in their Packs. It doesn’t matter to most if the male or female wants a Mate, an Alpha will usually order them to mark each other or at least those are the rumors we have heard.
- “Toss him over the border, if they have the guts to return, they can take his body home.” Inti growls, before we head back to the Pack-house.
- So far, we have been able to keep every female in our Pack safe and I will do my best to keep it that way.
- All this fighting, all these deaths are for one reason and one reason only.
- We can no longer find our fated Mate on the Days of the Full Moon, we now have to rely on the same methods Humans did and I doubt it is the best thing for Shifters.
- Most Shifters don’t want to take the time to get to know one another, especially males and that causes a lot of trouble. In some cases it is because of power hungry females and in some cases it is because of controlling males, but it all comes down to the same thing; for almost twenty years now kidnapping a female has become the new normal.
- Inti often asks how long it will be, before Packs will go to war over unmated females and every single time I tell him not to jinx it.
- With Little Crescent being a small Pack, we probably won’t survive a war and that means doom for every female in this territory.
- I manage to get a few more hours of sleep, before Inti’s voice wakes me, “My office, now.”
- I grab a shirt and sweat pants, pulling them on before I walk out of my room. Herold follows me down to Inti’s office and we both smile at the coffee that is waiting for us, Inti knows we both need it to wake up.
- “According to your Dad, we are not the only Pack that got attacked. They have gotten reports from all around the Kingdom of Packs that got attacked, but he also said there was something strange going on.” Inti says, before I have taken a sip of my coffee.
- Herold and I look at him, waiting for him to continue.
- “Some of the Packs that reported an attack, attacked Packs themselves.” He continues and I know we need to be prepared for anything from here on out.
- I grab my laptop to check on our border patrols and I grab the reports on all three attacks to see if we might have a weakness. I am not expecting to find one, I had the best teacher growing and Aunt Eos knows that she is damn good at her job.
- I can’t find a weakness in our defenses and all we can do is pray that we are doing enough to keep our Pack-members safe.
- Two weeks pass, before we have another attack and again we are victorious. I’m not so cocky to think we will always win and I start to think of a way to keep our Pack-members safe, if the worst should happen.
- Our double patrols was the best idea anyone could have thought of and I thank the Goddess regularly for our Warriors to think out loud. They had been discussing the possibility of someone crossing our border and if our female Warriors wouldn’t be run over by panicking Pack-members.
- I talked to our female Warriors first, just to find out how everyone responded to the sirens and most of our Pack-members go in to panic-mode. Some freeze, some start to scream and others start to run and that means our female Warriors are busy enough during an attack.
- While training them, I had asked our best Warriors what we could do to prevent that scenario from becoming true.
- I believe that this is the start of a war, a war that will cost lots of lives. If anyone ever thinks this through, they might start killing their own Pack-members to get a Mate and I hope that no one will ever think of it or that there will be someone to stop them.
