Chapter 7
- Like I said, I can’t go into details, but I can relate to her situation, so I knew she was telling the truth! In the previous session, he was forcing the client to admit she did, and she got angry and fired him instantly and hired me instead!
- “ This is crazy! Girl, I agree with you; he’s a jerk! Is he not supposed to defend his client and make her not guilty? Damn!” Felicia said, seemingly shocked.
- “She told me they had crossed paths before, and he hated her for that one time; apparently, she never knew he was a lawyer. She has faith in me; she trusted in me for believing in her.”
- “Girl, you’re going to be late; you have thirty minutes to get there! Best of luck! You look stunning too, "she said encouragingly.
- “If I don’t win, I have to pay a penalty of $10,000 and an additional $5000 to my team leader.
- The case is under wraps, which is why you don’t see it on the news; it’s very restricted, but it’s a big deal, alright. See you later; bye.”
- “ Just go and win like old,” Fel chimed in. Rushing out of her apartment, she frantically looked inside her handbag for her car key; to her disappointment, she had left it behind.
- Making their way to the stairs that lead to her apartment, she was approached by a burglar who politely said, “Ms. Watson, Mr. Hutchison wants you to join him in the car,” he said politely and bowed.
- “I think you have got it all wrong. I don’t know anyone called Mr….“you don’t know me?” Aiden’s voice dripped with amusement.
- “Coming from the girl who cried like a baby when I took her and her bestie to dinner? Ouch.”
- “Emily’s breath caught in her throat. ‘Mr. Hutchison… I — er — to what do I owe this visit? No, wait… how did you find me?’”She said with a gloomy voice.
- “ Are you seriously asking me that? We are going to be late”. “ Right! He’s Aiden Hutchison at the snap of his fingers things happen” she hummed under her breath.
- “ Excuse me, did you say something? She hasn’t changed a bit, still opinionated, he thought.
- “ Well I can’t go anywhere with you as I have a trial”, “Where else would you want me to take you? A date?
- “Come on, we both know your heart is in a million pieces — And I’m not in the business of patching people up.”
- My godmother, she asked me to bring you to and from the trial, he lied. As you know I’m a busy man, and every minute is money! Before I get in the car, there. He said. emotionlessly.
- “You sure have a sharp tongue, and would appreciate it if you don’t order me around, I don’t work for you!” The man had long left before she noticed. She walked towards the car, defeated.
- Aiden’s bodyguard opened the car door, motioning for her to get in. Emily hesitated, crossing her arms. “ I don’t take orders.”.He smirked. ‘Funny. I wasn’t asking.’With an exaggerated sigh, she got in.
- ‘You’re impossible.’And you’re predictable,’ he shot back. ‘But don’t worry — I like predictable people.’
- “Her brows furrowed as Aiden mentioned his godmother. She hadn’t realized who it was at first, but as the pieces clicked into place, logic took over. Of course — it had to be her client.
- But the thought made her pause. How could such a warm, kind woman be the godmother of someone so cold and unfeeling? It didn’t make sense. Opposites, maybe. Or was there more to him than he let on?”
- The courtroom buzzed with tension. The air was thick, humming with anticipation as Emily stood tall at the defendant’s table.
- Her heart pounded against her chest, but her expression was calm — focused. Across from her sat the prosecution, shoulders stiff, eyes cold. Her client, pale and trembling, glanced at her with tearful gratitude.
- It had been a brutal case. One where lies ran deeper than anyone had imagined. Her client’s boyfriend — the man she thought she would marry — had betrayed her. He hadn’t just stolen her trust; he’d stolen her future.
- He had lied about his so-called “niece” when, in reality, the girl was his secret lover. They had planned it all — to con her, to leave her broken and empty-handed.
- But Emily was no fool. She had pieced together every contradiction, every subtle slip in his story. With each cross-examination, she chipped away at the façade he had so carefully crafted.
- “Miss Watson, are you suggesting my client had malicious intent?” the opposing attorney had sneered, leaning back in his chair.
- Emily’s voice never wavered. “I’m not suggesting it — I’m proving it.”
- By the time she delivered her closing argument, the courtroom was silent. Every eye was locked on her — including Aiden Hutchison’s.
- He sat in the back, leaning casually with his arms crossed, but there was something different about him today. His expression wasn’t cold or aloof; it was thoughtful. Intent.
- Unbeknownst to Emily, Aiden had pulled strings she never expected. Despite the case being under wraps, the media outlets under his control had been quietly invited to record the trial.
- Camera lenses zoomed in on her, capturing every sharp rebuttal and every confident stride she made across the courtroom.
- It wasn’t until the final verdict — “Not guilty” — echoed through the room that Emily noticed the cameras at all. Her client collapsed into her arms, sobbing with relief. The room erupted into murmurs, but Emily barely heard them.
- She turned, eyes narrowing as they locked on Aiden, who now stood at the back of the room with a faint, knowing smirk.
- Her godmother, still shaken by the outcome, approached him with raised eyebrows. “What exactly are you doing, Aiden? I thought this was supposed to stay quiet.”
- He shrugged, adjusting the cufflinks on his tailored suit. “I said no one would know… but I never said they wouldn’t see.”
- Even she looked shocked by his words. Emily’s chest tightened as realization sank in.
- He had done this on purpose. Not to expose the case — but to showcase her. To let the world see what she was capable of.
- As she walked toward him, clutching her briefcase with trembling hands, she wasn’t sure whether to thank him… or demand an explanation.
- “You had this planned all along, didn’t you?” she asked quietly.
- Aiden’s gaze flicked to her, calm and unwavering. “I need to make profits.”
- Emily was speechless.
- And for the first time in a long time… she felt embarrassed.
