Chapter 6
- EVENTHE’s POV.
- I storm into my father’s office; he is on a call when I enter but that’s the least of my problems right now. I angrily bang the door and he looks up at me, his face breaks into a smile as soon as he sees me.
- “I will call you right back” after that, he ends the call and turns his attention to me again.
- “I didn’t think you would come to the office today, Eva” he says, “shouldn’t you be on your way to the airport now? You need to take care of the chaos going on in the pack house. I told you last night but you chose…
- “What did you tell Adir?” I cut him off with my lips pressed into a thin lim, “I saw him walk out of your office”
- “And I am sure you must have asked him why I summoned him, right?” Father leans back against the chair, his eyes glistening with some kind of mischief, “but if you didn’t, I will tell you, Evanthe. I asked him to stay away from you, I asked him to resign but do you know what he said to me?”
- I know the answer but I allow my father to keep talking while I try hard to keep my anger in check.
- “He said you are his employer and you are the only one who can ask him to resign and he will willingly”
- “Of course” I fold my hands across my chest, a smug expression on my face, “if you must know, he signed a contract and only I can terminate that contract. So you can stop asking him to resign because it’s almost impossible for him to listen to you”
- Father leans forward, this time his look becomes more dangerous and for a moment I remember the man he used to be years ago. I have haunted preys side by side with my father and I have seen how viscous he can be. I have seen him give orders to have pack members who defaulted killed and their bodies hung on stakes. All my life, I have witnessed his gruesomeness and I have lived with it but now he is trying to dictate my life for me, something I am already tired of doing.
- ”You have only known that man for a few days and you have taken his side more than necessary, Evanthe. Why? Are you sleeping with him now? Did you offer him sex?”
- “Dad!!” I half yell, appalled. How could he even say something like that to me?
- “Well, what else do you want me to think?” He asks me, “why does it look like the two of us are joined at the hip?”
- “Stop trying to harass my bodyguard, dad” I tell him, “and like I said stay away from him, Adir is my employee and I won’t let you do anything to him so back off”
- I continue glaring at him while he continues looking at me like I am some kind of alien. If it was maybe three years ago, I wouldn’t have bothered but after my divorce, my father had been acting like it’s my fault that Samaj chose to fuck someone else. Maybe because I didn’t take his advice of staying and taking back everything just like he taught me.
- “See you, fighting over a man”
- “Well, if that man happens to be my bodyguard then yes”
- Before he can respond, I storm out of the office. I have a whole lot of things to do and I do not want the issue of Adir to become a distraction for me. I feel more comfortable with him and I am not letting him go, father can go fuck himself. He took me off the X-gaming project and I am still upset about that.
- “Good morning ma’am” my assistant greets me as she sees me.
- “After this morning meeting, cancel all of my appointments for today and have one scheduled for Mr Anton”
- “But I thought…..
- “Do as I have said Lisa and do not ask me questions”
- “Yes, ma’am” she nods before walking off while I push open the door to my office and storm in. I haven’t thought about my ex-husband in a long time but my father would do anything and everything for me not to forget him. Samaj used to be my life, everything about me revolved around him. I wouldn’t do anything without his support and that’s because I loved him to every single bit. Given a woman of my caliber, it was already overwhelming for me but then again, I am my father’s daughter and I will not let any man walk around me like I am nothing. My attention is drawn to my daughter’s picture on the table and my lips curl into a tiny smile. She is my biggest cheerleader and I love her the most in this world, that’s why I fought for her custody like my life depended on it this morning. As if on cue, my phone starts ringing and Adir’s name pops up and I immediately pick it up.
- “Hello”
- “Hello mama” Zoe’s voice filters through and the smile on my face intensifies.
- “Hey baby, how are you?”
- “I am fine mama. Your handsome bodyguard came over. He said he will bring me back when I’m done”
- “Yes baby. Mummy is really busy today okay? He will bring you back okay?”
- “Okay mama”
- “I love you okay?”
- “I love you too”
- “You can give the phone to him now okay?”
- “Okay mama”
- After a while, his deep baritone reaches my ear and I find myself grinning from ear to ear to ear like a young school girl in love.
- “Hey!” He says from the other end, “i have your daughter now”
- “Thank you for going to her”
- “It’s fine, it’s part of my job. I will take care of her until you are off work. How about that?”
- “Will you really do that?”
- “Sure, I’m less busy anyways and I think she has a lot of stories to tell me about you”
- A chuckle leaves my lips as I lean back against my revolving chair, “What do you even mean?”
- “Well, I am going to hear stories about you today”
- “Well, you can send me your address later and I will come pick her up okay?”
- “Sure”
- “Thank you so much, Adir”
- “You are welcome ma’am, I will leave you to your work now”
- “Sure”
- After that, I end the car as my mind drifts off to a certain someone. Someone I haven’t thought about in years. Why the heck am I suddenly thinking about him? I immediately shake my head to remove such thoughts. Now I should be more concerned about my meeting with Anton. I need to know why the bid didn’t go to me.
- My attention is drawn to the door when a knock comes on it.
- “Come on in” I say out loud, picking up the document in front of me. The door opens up and Anton steps in, a sleazy smile on his face.
- “I didn’t expect that you would want to meet with me again after what happened” he makes himself comfortable on the chair in front of me, the smile still on his face. How I want to fucking smack that smirk off his fucking face.
- “Of course, you shouldn’t even be anywhere near my office but then again, I am a professional so I will keep personal relationships aside. Tell me Anton, what exactly are you and your grandfather doing?”
- “Truth be told, Evanthe” he leans forward, his eyes staring deep into mine, “I also do not know what’s going on and I have no idea who got the bid. My grandfather just refused to sell, he didn’t tell me who he sold it to. He won’t tell me”
- “Who does business like that?” I angrily bang the document on the table, “that was not the agreement”
- “Well, I heard him talking to your father, maybe they will come up with something. Just don’t worry yourself and focus on the other projects you have, Eva”
- “You do not get to tell me what to do” I roll my eyes to the back of my head, “and this is your fault. I need a list of all of your father’s business associates”
- “You know that’s against the rules”
- I scoff, reclining on my chair again, “you either get it for me or I will get it any other way. The ball is in your court. You know how much I hate losing, Anton.
- “Fine” he heaves a sigh, “I will have my assistant email it to you”
- “Good…” the words hang in my mouth when the landline starts ringing and I immediately pick up.
- “Hello ma’am”
- “Yes, tell me”
- “Mr Samaj is on his way to your office ma’am” my assistant says from the other end and my heart actually skips a bit. Samaj is coming here? But why? I haven’t seen him since we finalized our divorce and broke our bond so why the heck is he coming here?
- My door pushes open and he steps in in all his glory. Suit tailored to perfection, his hair slicked back beautifully and he still has that cute looking beard that I loved. Me and this man went wrong in so many different ways.
- “Hello dear” his voice reaches my ear and his face breaks into a smile, “it’s been a minute”
- I look at Anton who also looks surprised, he knows about Samaj and I too.
- “I guess I will see you later then!” He says and before I can answer, he disappears out of the office leaving me and my ex husband alone. He looks just the same but now we are on different sides of our world and I would hate to go back to his world.
- “What are you doing here?” I ask him, “you sure have some guts showing up in my office”
- “I wanted to see my daughter” he responds, “and I figured I would stop by to see the mother of my daughter. We might be divorced but we are not enemies, right?
- “You have not seen Zoe in five months then you waltz into my office and ask to see her? Well, you would not be seeing her so leave. I have a lot going on in my head so I do not need the distraction”
- “Just because you have custody of her doesn't mean I can not see her, Eva” he says, “so I can see her when I dim fit. I am going to see my day today and I do not have your permission for it. I only came to tell you since I was in the area. I will go to her school to pick her up, I will bring her back in the evening”
- I scoff, picking up a pen from the table and setting my gaze back on him. The audacity of this man.
- “Well, if you must know I have sent someone to get her already”
- A frown settles on his face, “what do you mean?”
- “She is with someone else” I tell him again, “so do well going to get her”
- “Did you get a new boyfriend?” He sounds sarcastic and I almost smile in faint smugness at the look on his face,
- “It’s none of your business who I give my child to, Samaj. Just go into hiding like you have these past five months; I really do not give a care about you”
- “I need to see Zoe” he grits.
- “She doesn’t want to see you” I blurt out, “so get lost”
- I watch him pull out his phone from his breast pocket before dialing a number and placing it against his ear.
- “Hello…yes, this is her father….yess, tell me…okay, i will wait for it then”
- The smile on his face grows wider as he ends the call.
- “Your bodyguard huh?”
- “And so?”
- “Well, I am getting his address and I am taking my daughter. You can come if you want to” Before I can answer, he turns around and storms out of the office while I also pick up my bag and storm after him. If he is going to cause a scene, I need to be there..right? And for the record, I need to have a talk with that school head.
