Carson’s mood was buoyant all the way home. “Now that you’re pregnant, you should quit your job, honey. Just stay at home. I’ll work hard for you and the kid.”
“No can do,” I answered.
“Why not? Worried I can’t support you both?”
“Of course, not. I know you’re a capable man,” I praised him. “But I signed a contract with my company. There’s a breach of contract clause when we signed it, since they’re worried I might jump ship or resign. If I don’t work until the end of the contract term, I have to pay a huge sum of money as compensation.”
I mentioned the compensation just to see if he would take his word back, but to my surprise, he didn’t mind it. “Don’t worry, for I am here. I’ll settle the compensation problem for you.”
He didn’t seem to be lying, so I sighed quietly. If I could choose again, I wouldn’t have chosen to marry someone without careful consideration, much less to a man like him. I was by his side through the best years of my life. I gave him all my love, but what I had in return were cold shoulders, lies, and betrayals.
