Chapter 15 Carson's Mother Berated Him

  • There was a moment’s silence after Carson said so, before his mother began crying out loud, “Oh, my son is chasing me out of the house! That’s it, this will be the end of me!” It was hard to rein her in as soon as she began running amok. Now, her cries were gradually getting louder and louder despite Jolene and Eliza’s attempts to placate her.
  • However, the fact that there were people who were trying to placate her only encouraged her as she scolded how much of a heartless b*stard his son was, as well as complaining about how much she had sacrificed for both Carson and the Boyer Family.
  • While Carson had always been obedient toward her, he was also someone with a lot of pride; she didn’t seem to notice that he was angered with how she berated him in front of so many people. “You can ask for all the repayment you want since you’ve sacrificed so much for the family! I will give you whatever that I can offer, or you can take my life if that still doesn’t satisfy you!”
  • In the meantime, I was listening intently on what was happening outside while sitting in my bedroom with Keira in my arms. I assumed that the farce would continue on, but I never expected it to be cut short by a yell.
  • “What are you trying to pull off by doing this? Get back into your room and stop humiliating yourself, you b*tch!” My father-in-law finally spoke up after remaining silent all that while.
  • My mother-in-law had always feared him, thus her wails stopped after he lashed out at her. However, I was feeling that it was a shame that the show had ended so quickly. There was a knock on the door before my father-in-law's voice came through. “Lily, your mother-in-law was in the wrong for what happened just now. Please allow me to apologize to you in her stead, so don't hold a grudge against her.”
  • Upon hearing his apology, I replied with feigned generosity, “Dad, I’m not angry. Both of you are Carson’s parents, which makes you both my parents as well. It’s normal for an argument to break out between parent and child, so I won’t take it to heart.”
  • “I know you’re a good kid. The fact that Carson is able to marry you proves how fortunate we are.”
  • “It’s my pleasure to marry Carson too, Dad.” I could easily reply with something equally nice, to which he grunted and left in satisfaction.
  • After that, Carson entered the room while intending to hug me as an apology, only to give up on it upon noticing that Keira was fast asleep in my arms. I had Keira sleep with us later at night in order to stop him from making a move on me, which he took as a sign that my feelings were hurt by my mother-in-law. Thus, he gazed at me with an apologetic look on his face, while we spent the rest of the night in silence.
  • The next morning, I saw my mother-in-law as soon as I brought Keira out of the room after I was done washing up. She was wearing a fake smile as she looked at me. “Lily, I made some porridge and bought some steamed buns, so come have breakfast.”
  • “Thanks, Mom!” I gave my usual reply before leading Keira to the dining table. My father-in-law was already eating, while Jolene was filling up her own bowl as she greeted me with a smile. “Good morning.”
  • While pulling out a chair for Keira, I replied to her, “Good morning.” Jolene quickly filled up a bowl with some porridge, which she set down in front of Keira, but Keira didn’t seem to want it as she pushed it away from her. “Mom, I want some milk.”
  • “Isn’t porridge nice? Why would you want milk?” My mother-in-law was intending on defending Jolene, but she quieted down as soon as her husband shot her a glare.
  • “Milk is good for kids.” While pouring some milk for Keira and myself, I made that reply, but I then quickly added as I knew none of them drank milk, “You should also try it out, as it’s good for your health.”
  • “I don’t like the odd smell of it,” my mother-in-law said with disdain before sitting down to eat her porridge.
  • Meanwhile, I checked on Jolene as I drank my milk to see her glancing non-stop at the entrance of the dining room. Thus, I mentally scoffed before urging her, “Jolene, you should also eat.”
  • “I would like to wait for Carson and Eliza,” said Jolene, but I figured she must be waiting for Carson instead of the latter.
  • Unexpectedly, my father-in-law, who had been eating his porridge in silence, lifted his head to retort, “Eliza wouldn’t wake up until ten in the morning, so why would you wait for her?”
  • “Yeah, I also had Carson sleep for a little longer as he told me he was tired, so you don’t need to wait for any of them,” I said in a deliberate manner, which triggered Jolene to look at me with a fleeting but hateful gaze.
  • As expected, not only was she so focused on Carson, she was also assuming that we had sex last night, which made me chuckle in my head. Jolene, you should just wallow in your feelings of jealousy all day long.
  • Since she assumed that Carson wasn’t about to show up anytime soon, Jolene could only sit down to have her breakfast, but he walked into the dining room after she had only taken a few bites. When she saw him walking in, Jolene quickly stood to fill up a bowl of porridge for him, which I observed with indignance as I realized she was no longer bothering to hold herself back.
  • However, Carson poured himself some milk before sitting down beside me instead of eating the porridge Jolene gave him when he noticed that Keira and I were drinking milk. There was a fleeting awkwardness in Jolene’s expression as my father-in-law coughed. He then left the dining room slowly after pushing his bowl away from him.
  • As soon as he left, my mother-in-law was acting up again. “Carson, why don’t you have some porridge? Jolene made it, and it tastes great.” That old b*tch was just telling me that she was the one who made the porridge, but now, she was lying about it to Carson.
  • There was a look of impatience on his face as he retorted, “I prefer milk. Is there something wrong with that?”
  • My mother-in-law had nothing to say to that, thus she looked my way while changing the topic. “I will look for a housekeeper on the labor market today, so what kind of person do you think I should look for? By the way, how much should the housekeeper’s monthly salary be?”
  • Apparently, she wasn’t about to listen to anything I said last night as she was still intent on hiring a housekeeper. I decided I would relent on the matter, but I wouldn’t be paying for the housekeeper, so she should ask for the money from Carson. I checked my watch before looking toward Keira. “Keira, you’ll be late if we don’t get going. Finish up your milk so that I can bring you to school.”
  • Upon noticing that I was ignoring her, the expression on my mother-in-law’s face soured, but I simply bid her goodbye without paying attention to it, “Mom, darling, Jolene, I’ll be taking my leave!”
  • As I left the dining room with Keira, I heard her repeat what she said to Carson, which only earned her a disgruntled reply from him. “It’s up to you!”
  • I went to my company after dropping Keira off at the kindergarten. In order to focus on dealing with Carson, I had taken some time off work, so now that I had come back to work, my colleagues came to greet me as soon as they saw me.
  • I returned to my office after greeting everyone. As soon as I sat down, Jessica Rose from the public relations department came in. “Lily, you’re finally back! I missed you a lot!”
  • “Drop the formalities and tell me what you need.” I wouldn’t believe for a second in what she said, as she would only come to me whenever she encountered a problem.
  • “We have a very important client who will be visiting our company today. I need a capable and pretty designer who can help me in receiving him, so I thought of you.”
  • “You sure flatter me, Jessica. I assume that I can’t turn this down?”
  • Upon hearing what I said, she and I exchanged a knowing glance before she winked at me, hinting that she would be relying on me to attend to the client, then she left my office after some chatter. I had gotten quite a lot of accumulated tasks that I had to settle after my days off work, which I spent the entire morning clearing out. After lunch, I went to the pantry to get myself some water, only to realize there was a crowd in it upon arriving there.
  • “I heard that the client who will be visiting is Eric Walker, the president of Walker International.”
  • “I heard that too. I’ve heard that he’s a handsome man as well!”
  • “He’s not only handsome, but extremely capable! I’ve heard that he has a passion for jewelry, which was why he also invested in Cartier.”
  • Before entering the pantry, I let out a cough, while the women who were engaged in small talk swarmed toward me as soon as they saw me.
  • “Lily, I sure envy you! I had been begging Jessica for the chance to entertain President Walker in order to get a chance to come into close contact with him, only to have Jessica turn me down! It wasn’t until later that I heard that you will be handling the task!” Aliana from the design department began complaining as soon as she got a hold on me.
  • “Do you know why you are not fit for the task?” Lucy giggled as she took over the conversation.
  • “Why is that so?”
  • “It’s because you have never met a handsome man in your life, so you might pounce on President Walker as soon as you see him! Meanwhile, Lilian is probably already immune toward good looks as her husband is also a handsome man!”
  • I used to feel complacent upon hearing such words regarding Carson, but all I could do then was give them a bitter smile without saying a word. In order to escape them, I left the pantry as soon as I got my cup of coffee.
  • As soon as I left the pantry, I heard the doors of the lift opening after a chime. So, I lifted my head, only to be met by the sight of a handsome man who had an air of superiority and aloofness to him. I wondered why he would appear here.
