Chapter 7 My Parents Wouldn't Let Me Back In

  • While ignoring her stares, I stood behind Carson calmly, which my mother-in-law didn’t take kindly to as she pointed toward the supplements in the ward while showing off, “Jolene brought us some stuff again this morning! She’s such a kind soul to visit my husband despite her pregnancy!”
  • She would obviously be indicating my lack of concern over the situation, which I mentally scoffed at. The supplements I bought for them prior to my father-in-law’s hospitalization were far better than what Jolene bought for them, but they were a bunch of ungrateful thugs, after all, scorning me using such petty reasons.
  • Upon noticing my indifference, my mother-in-law was even more indignant as she tried to mock me even more, “Jolene is a kind and pretty woman with a great personality. Besides, she’s also pregnant with a boy, so her family must be so lucky to have her!”
  • I always kept my silence whenever she mocked me, but I didn’t feel like doing so today. “Since when did she check on her baby’s gender? Why would she tell Mom before even telling me?”
  • What I said made her freeze in place as Carson did the same before chiding her, “Mom, why would you talk about that now? It’s too early to be able to know the baby’s gender, so Jolene must be teasing you! Don’t you take it so seriously!”
  • Despite how my mother-in-law’s face flushed due to anger after being chided by her son, I wasn’t about to relent that easily. It was thus I asked while turning toward Carson, “Darling, is it because you want a son that Mom is mentioning it? It’s my fault after all for failing your family.”
  • Carson spoke up unhappily as soon as I said so, “Darling, what are you talking about? You’re my number one, and Keira will be my only child.”
  • I mentally scoffed upon realizing that he was still treating me like an idiot who knew nothing. Because of that minor incident, the both of us left the ward after a short visit. On our way back, Carson checked on me before opening up cautiously, “Darling, my mom isn’t getting any younger, so please don’t take her words to heart.”
  • I gave a nod as I said, “She’s your mother, so I would of course not take anything she said to heart.”
  • Carson didn’t seem to notice my mockery as he assumed that I was as ignorant as I used to be. He thus rambled on about how his parents had worked hard to raise him in an attempt to get on my goodside, but it only roused feelings of sorrow within me. It wasn’t directed at Carson’s parents but at my own parents as I realized how poorly I treated them after they put in so much effort in raising me.
  • Not only did I argue with them over a man, but I even swore to break ties with them. Throughout my marriage with Carson, the only time I contacted my mother was when I needed money, which consisted of a threat that I would commit suicide if she didn’t lend me the money. It wasn’t until then that I realized how much of a sh*tty daughter I had been for hurting my parents despite how they cared for me.
  • Upon noticing my foul mood, Carson assumed that I was still angry at his mother, so he paid me no heed while offering to send me home. However, the mere sight of him right now would make me nauseous, thus I dismissed him after telling him that I would be going to meet Isabella.
  • But instead of doing that, I went back to my parent’s house for the first time ever since my marriage. My mother broke down in tears as soon as she saw me, but my father wasn’t about to let me in as he asked while blocking my entry, “Who are you? Have you not knocked on the wrong door?”
  • “Dad, I know I made a mistake!” I begged for his mercy as I sobbed direly.
  • However, all I earned was a scoff from him before he spat, “What do you need from us? We have nothing, nor would we give you anything!” I was left standing outside for a long while after he shut the door in my face, so I ended up leaving as he refused to open the door.
  • It was thus I went to visit Isabella, who was shocked to see that I was crying. “Lily, did something happen?”
  • Upon listening to my account on the incident with my parents, she shook her head. “What happened just now was the accumulated result of years of estrangement, Lily. You hurt them so badly back then, so it’s actually understandable that they would receive you in such a manner. However, they are your parents after all, so they will find it in themselves to forgive you.”
  • “Will they?” I wasn’t so sure about that as tears fell while I recalled our strifes back when I decided to marry Carson, only to realize how much of a b*stard I was back then to treat my parents in such a manner over a sh*tty man.
  • Meanwhile, Isabella gave me a pat on my hand before saying, “Lily, you have to calm down, as I have something else to tell you. Promise me that you would remain calm.”
  • “What is it?”
  • “I had a detective investigate Jolene’s boyfriend, and I now have the results.”
  • My heart sank as soon as I saw her worried look, then quickly snatched the documents she held from her, only to be stunned by what I saw in them.
