Chapter 19 The Malicious Manager

  • Cole went through some paperwork the next day, and Anna was discharged. Just when they were about to see some houses, Lila called Anna.
  • "Are you busy today, Anna?"
  • "Did something happen, Mom?" asked Anna.
  • "The product I invested in is making some money. Your father and I talked, and we've decided to get a bigger house. You and Cole can take our old house."
  • She continued, "We're in Thornton Homes right now, and we're looking to buy one of the houses here. You used to be a retail assistant here, so I was wondering if you could talk to them and give us a little discount."
  • Anna was in a tight spot. "It's been a year since I quit, and my colleagues have all since left."
  • "There's no harm trying, though. Come over. Your father and I are still waiting." With that, she hung up.
  • Anna shook her head speechlessly and looked at Cole. "We might have to make a trip to Thornton Homes."
  • Thornton Homes, huh? That's one of Eddie's business premises. I have the token. If I want to, I can get anything for free there.
  • Twenty minutes later, Cole and Anna showed up at Thornton Homes.
  • "Why did you bring him here?"
  • Lila's face fell when she saw Cole. She still couldn't forgive him for embarrassing them during Henderey's banquet when he came uninvited. Matt did save what was left of their dignity just in time, but she couldn't let go of the fact that they were laughed at.
  • Lila shot Cole a look. "Get a job. Are you expecting my daughter to support you forever?"
  • Gordon huffed as well. "I can't believe my girl married someone so useless."
  • Anna looked upset. "Stop it, you two. He's working hard."
  • "To leech off you," Lila rebutted.
  • "Alright, that's enough. Let's just take a look at the house."
  • Once they entered the building, a young lady in office attire slowly approached them. "Here for the free food again, you two?"
  • Lila's face fell. "Hey, watch your attitude. We're not mooching off you guys."
  • "In that case, why are you here? To get a house? Can you even afford one?" The lady folded her arms, sneering. "I thought so."
  • "We can afford it. We're getting the one we wanted earlier," said Lila.
  • "It's an 800-square-foot luxury unit. It costs 9,000 per square foot, and we require a down payment of 180,000."
  • "Hey, that's 500 bucks more per square foot!"
  • "That's for first-time customers. This is your second visit here."
  • "Fine. We'll pay." Lila gritted her teeth and rummaged through her bag for her card, but to her chagrin, she realized she had forgotten to take it with her. "Hey, where's my card?"
  • "Hah, I knew it. Leeches." The lady sneered. "I know your kind very well. Now get out of here. This isn't some kind of place you leeches can come."
  • "Call me a leech again and I'll—"
  • Just when Lila was about to fly into a rage, a bald, middle-aged man came to check out the commotion. "What's going on here?"
  • "Oh, Mr. Zimmers. It's nothing much. Just some leeches trying to get free food." The lady approached her manager and embellished the story.
  • "What?" The manager huffed. Just when he was about to tell the Brown couple off, he noticed a familiar woman standing with them. "Wait, is that you, Anna?"
  • Anna smiled bitterly. "Mr. Zimmers," she said politely.
  • The bald man was Felix Zimmers. He was a manager and a pervert.
  • He used to harass Anna back when she worked there, but she never gave in.
  • Felix was grinning. "Are you buying a house, Anna?"
  • "My parents are."
  • "I see. You could've called me. We're running a promotion now. I can give you the lowest price if you want." He leered at Anna and turned his attention to the lady. "Layla, she used to be the top saleswoman here. However, she quit because she had to take care of her crippled husband."
  • Layla sneered. "So, you're the sales champion. We used to have a few crazy women hanging around our place and screaming bloody murder. According to them, you stole their husbands."
  • "Hey, that's not true. She's married. She wouldn't do that." Felix shot Layla a look of fake anger. "Don't listen to her, Anna. Nothing like that happened." Then, he looked at Cole. "Ah, this must be your husband. Very handsome." He's just someone who leeches off his wife, though.
  • Anna got the implied message, and she stared down in humiliation. Then, Felix chuckled in silence. "Let's talk business. We're running a promotion, so how does 10,000 per square foot sound?"
  • "Ten thousand?" Holy sh*t, he's even worse than that lady.
