• She grabbed her keys, pulled on a fresh jacket to cover the tear in her coat, and left the chaos of the flat behind.
• The hospital was in the next avenue, a sprawling, modern building that always smelled faintly of cleaning fluid and despair. Renee hated coming here, but it was the best place for her Mum, with the best nurses and the best equipment. For a moment, she wondered how long her mum had in that hospital until the next bill came. It was also bloody expensive, a fact that pressed down on her chest like a stone as she walked through the brightly lit, sterile corridors.
