Chapter 16

  • It was a Monday, new week, fresh start.
  • Renee tried her best to grow accustomed to the fluorescent lights of the Leadworth Bank office, she hated how cold and unforgiving they were considering all that is going on, she didn’t want to be in the spotlight or anything that seemed pronounced. It had been a few days after the wedding collapse, Renee, drained and unsure about what the day had in store for her, walked into the call centre. She was wearing the most inconspicuous clothes she owned, a grey blouse and black trousers, hoping to blend into the beige cubicles and the sea of headset-wearing employees.
  • She barely registered the familiar scents of stale printer toner and cheap coffee as she made her way to her designated desk. Her movements were mechanical, driven by the desperate need to clock in and pretend that the world wasn't publicly calling her a slut and a gold-digger.
