- I stared at the man through the bars of the makeshift cell. He huddled in the corner, shoulders shaking, looking more victim than soldier. His wounds were real enough: a deep cuts across his torso, partially healed but clearly painful.
- "Let's try again," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Why did they send you here?"
- "I told you already," he whispered, avoiding stare. "I was just trying to escape. They were going to kill me."
