Chapter 3

  • Mia's point of view
  • The night was painfully slow as my stomach wouldn't stop growling because I hadn't eaten any food since the previous afternoon, but thankfully, it's morning again.
  • Right, I slept outside the pack's kitchen since I couldn't afford a motel.
  • My phone beeped loudly, and I quickly checked it before it would draw people's attention—that is, if anyone was awake already. I rolled my eyes when I saw it was a text from that number Jessica had texted me with yesterday.
  • "I am not done with you yet. I will take everything you've ever had from you... Even your life!" the text read.
  • Not taking the text seriously, I scoffed and shoved my phone back in my bag. Since it was morning and I didn't want anyone to know that I spent the night in the Everest Pack or slept outside the pack's kitchen, I boarded a cab and left.
  • >>
  • Our journey from the Everest Pack had been successful until we were nearing The Black Wolves Pack's border. The driver suddenly lost control of the car, and he drove into a tree. My life flashed before my eyes when the car bounced back and then started somersaulting.
  • I held tightly to my seatbelt, furiously screaming at the driver to find a way to stop the car before it was too late, but there was nothing the driver could do at the moment.
  • After a moment of somersaulting, the car finally stopped, but it was upside down, making my head hit the roof, and I felt the pain in my spine.
  • "Are you alright, Miss?" the driver asked as he tried to turn around to face me.
  • "I... I'm... not..." I couldn't speak. My throat suddenly felt dry, and I couldn't find my voice.
  • "Don't worry. I'll get out and find a way to get you out too," he assured me.
  • I simply nodded since I could not speak, but a sharp pain hit the back of my head and I winced.
  • "Just stay calm, I'll get you out," he assured me again. I didn't try to reply this time and simply stayed silent.
  • The driver tried his best and somehow managed to get out. Then he rushed to my side and forcefully pulled the door open. Getting me out was the hardest and most painful thing I'd ever experienced. I was positioned in a way that I could hurt my spinal cord if I wasn't pulled out with extreme care.
  • After the driver's patient struggle, he managed to pull me out, and that's when I realized that I was covered in blood... My white dress had turned red.
  • "We must get you to the nearest hospital, you're losing too much blood," he said.
  • "But where am I bleeding from?" I asked as I looked over my body to find the source of all this blood.
  • His gaze zeroed in on my head. "You're bleeding from your head."
  • "What?!" My eyes widened as fear spread all over my body.
  • "We must get you to the hospital immediately," he said.
  • I nodded and tried to walk but released a painful grunt as I quickly grabbed his right arm for support. "I don't think I can walk," I cried, worrying that I might have hurt my spinal cord and would lose my ability to walk.
  • He quickly crouched in front of me. "Come on, hop on my back."
  • "Thank you."
  • "Hold on tight. I'm about to run, and I'll apply my wolf's speed," he said. I could only nod before he took off at full speed.
  • >>
  • We made it to a clinic just after the border, and thankfully, there weren't too many patients. A doctor and two female nurses began attending to us immediately.
  • "What's your relationship with the patient? Are you her mate or brother?" I heard the doctor asking the cab driver.
  • "No, no, I'm just a cab driver who she booked," the driver replied quickly.
  • "But you'll need to sign some documents and—"
  • "I don't know her," he cut the doctor off. He glanced briefly at me before turning back to the doctor. "She can sort herself out from here." Then he left without waiting for the doctor to say another word.
  • "But..." The doctor faced me, looking confused.
  • I gave him a weak smile and said, "I can take care of everything."
  • He nodded affirmatively. "You'll sign these documents, and we'll administer treatment immediately."
  • He handed me a file and I quickly read through the first page. It was just stating that I was fully responsible for this treatment and blablabla. I signed the document, then they began treatment immediately.
  • The doctor was extremely careful. He cleaned my head wound first and treated it before doing an X-ray to check if my spine was hurt from the accident. While the doctor and nurses were checking my X-ray, I heard my phone ringing inside my bag. I quickly reached for it, only to see it was Jessica's number flashing on the screen.
  • I wanted to ignore it, but she wouldn't stop calling, which was disrupting the quietness of the emergency room.
  • "What?" I asked harshly after answering the call.
  • "Calm down, sis," her voice sounded from the other end. Although I couldn't see her, I could tell there was a smug smile on her face. "You're still alive, that's a miracle."
  • My brows furrowed as I wondered what she was implying.
  • "How did you like my surprise? You didn't sustain too many injuries, I presume?" Then she released a loud laugh.
  • The text she sent me earlier this morning replayed in my head and my mouth dropped open... So, this was what her text meant. She was after my life.
  • "This is just a teaser, sis. I have so much in stock for you." With that, she ended the call.
  • I stared in a daze, trying to recall how or where I had offended her that led to her having so much hatred toward me. A thought suddenly crossed my mind—I should call my parents and inform them about this.
  • After dialing my father's number, I waited for him to pick up, but he didn't until the call ended. Not wanting to give up, I tried again and he picked up this time.
  • "Why are you calling me, you worthless child?!" he barked into the phone.
  • Deciding that this wasn't the time to beat around the bush, I went straight to the point. "I am at a clinic. I was involved in an accident on my way back home this morning, and I was rushed here..."
  • "So what is my business with that?" he interrupted me. "Why are you calling to tell me about it?" He sounded irritated.
  • "I just got off the phone with Jessica. She said she's the mastermind behind my accident, and she threatened to cause more harm to me. I just want to—"
  • "My Jessica would never do that. She is not as dubious as you!" he defended her.
  • I clenched my jaw and licked my teeth as I tried to hold back my tears. I couldn't help but feel hurt at his open bias towards Jessica... He could vouch for her even though she was openly scheming against me.
  • "Stop trying to gain our love by framing Jessica. You should be happy that we acknowledge you as our family, so stop trying to sow discord between us!" he said coldly.
  • "Dad, she really—" He hung up on me.
  • Tears flowed down my cheeks as I stared dumbfoundedly at my phone. I couldn't believe this was my blood-related family. I couldn't believe they'd prioritize a stranger over their own blood.
  • "Why are you crying?" The doctor suddenly interrupted our conversation.
  • I quickly wiped my tears and flashed him a smile. "I'm fine."
  • He nodded. "You shouldn't cry, or you'll trigger a severe headache," he warned me, though in a polite tone. "So... Your spine is perfectly fine. You just need a good rest."
  • I nodded, sighing in great relief.
  • "Nurse Joy will accompany you to the front desk, where you'll make payment while we get your prescription and medication ready."
  • "Thank you."
  • Nurse Joy came to me, she helped me up, and we exited the room. The front desk was just a few steps away from the emergency room, so we arrived in no time. Nurse Joy handed the cashier a file, the cashier went through it for a moment, then requested my bank card, and I gave it to her.
  • "Your card was declined," the cashier said after a moment. That was when I recalled that my father had blocked my account.
  • I slammed my fist on the desk and grunted in frustration. Not knowing what to do, I began rambling through my bag for any cash possible, but unfortunately, there was none. Just when I was about to give up, I saw a black card.
  • "Here." I handed it with a big smile, not bothering to check whose card it was.
  • The cashier collected it and debited the card. After she was done, I sat on a bench in the waiting room for my prescription and medication. While I was waiting, I received a call and my heart stopped when I saw the name flashing on the screen: King Derulo Blackwood.
  • Gulping l
  • oudly, I adjusted my posture before answering the call. "Hello..."
  • "How dare you use my credit card?!" his deep, angry voice cut me off.
