Chapter 5 Get Lost!

  • “Here is the evidence,” Harvey said with a calm voice without showing any signs of happiness even after finding the proof to justify his innocence, unlike his usual docile character. Nonetheless, Alice was able to tell that he was not lying.
  • So this phone is the evidence?! Alice looked at Harvey in confusion and was about to say something, only to be interrupted by Polly, who desperately snatched the phone and flashed it in her hands like she was showing off.
  • Polly then contemptuously chuckled and said, “You’re quite smart, aren’t you, Harvey? You’re really not ashamed of yourself at all when you lie, huh? We gave you a chance to prove your innocence, but you showed us your phone and said it was your evidence. You’ve gotta be kidding me! Anyway, the best way to deal with a guy like him is to humiliate him so badly that he will want to leave us himself. Let’s see what he has in his phone!”
  • When everyone else curiously got closer to take a peek, Polly browsed through the content in the phone and tossed it back at Harvey. “Where’s the proof? I don’t see anything at all! Don’t you think you can fool us with your shenanigans! Pack your stuff and leave at once!”
  • Polly was growing eager to see Harvey gone, so she was actually planning to cast him away regardless of his innocence. Otherwise, she would make a fool out of herself for having gathered all their relatives to watch the drama.
  • In the meantime, Harvey managed to catch the phone in time before he glared at Polly with a cold gaze. Judging from her action, he immediately knew she was trying to damage his phone in order to destroy the evidence. Seriously? Am I a joke to you? You need to work more on your dirty tricks!
  • “The evidence you want is right here. Check it out yourself.” Harvey soon tapped the screen a few times shortly before a voice was heard, rendering Polly and the other relatives unhappy.
  • “Wait a second! That’s Harvey’s voice, isn’t it?”
  • “Who was he talking to? Who is Mr. O’Niell? Could that be… Patrick O’Niell?”
  • “Wait a second! They mentioned a lady and a man, whose name is Eddie. Was Harvey really set up by someone else?”
  • At that moment, the conversation that Harvey had with Patrick earlier in the hospital was played. Listening to the recording, Polly’s face turned pale, because it was obvious that Patrick was behind all this even though he didn’t explicitly admit his wrongdoing.
  • Damn it! This guy really did manage to find the evidence to prove his innocence! Polly gritted her teeth just when she realized the changes in everyone’s expressions around her, especially her sister-in-law, Daniella Jolie, who was strangely smiling at her. “It looks like Harvey isn’t entirely dumb at all! At least he knew how to record the conversation with the culprit to prove that he was set up. Polly, your son-in-law is not as useless as you’d always said! In fact, he is pretty smart!”
  • “Polly, now that Harvey has found the evidence to prove his innocence, you should probably just let the matter slide. Harvey is still your son-in-law after all, so why are you treating him so harshly? It’s not like we all don’t know what kind of a person he is. Be a little more flexible, would you?”
  • Martin had three siblings in total, while Daniella was Hugo’s wife, who could barely get along with Polly. As the two women were usually fighting against each other, Daniella gladly seized the opportunity to mock Polly sarcastically.
  • In the meantime, Polly responded with a darkened look, seemingly unhappy with Daniella’s sarcastic words. What do you mean by ‘be a little more flexible’? You’re obviously trying to make fun of me, Daniella! Then, when she shifted her gaze to Harvey, she resentfully beat herself up for making a fool out of herself in front of Daniella. This is all your fault, Harvey! You weren’t usually this smart, so how the hell did you manage to find the evidence?!
  • “It’s fake! It must be fake!” Polly grunted nonchalantly and darted toward Harvey as she tried to snatch his phone once again.
  • “It’s just a voice recording. Who knows if you got help from the outside and faked it?! You’re really naïve to think that this is going to help prove your innocence! The O’Niell Family is established and reputable in the city; plus, they have business associations with us. So do you think I don’t know about Patrick’s character at all? That man is young and full of potential, so plotting against you with some dirty tricks is definitely beneath him! Give me that phone now! I want you to pack your stuff and leave immediately!”
  • Polly accused Harvey of faking the recording while praising Patrick to the skies. Who do you think you are, Harvey? You’re just a nobody, and Patrick has better things to do than setting you up!
  • Nevertheless, Harvey dodged Polly’s grasp, trying to avoid a conflict with the latter. Meanwhile, he raised his phone up high in the air and showed a video of him and Patrick.
  • “Oh, so it’s not just a voice recording; there’s also a video. It looks like the evidence is quite legit.”
  • “Wow! Look at Harvey! He seems pretty manly, doesn’t he? He didn’t flinch even in front of Patrick O’Niell. Well, it appears that he is not as useless as he is said to be. At least he knows how to use the Browns’ reputation to his advantage to intimidate Patrick!”
  • “Since Patrick has a crush on Alice, he could have just said so. After all, the O’Niell Family is quite reputable and established in the city. So if he marries Alice, it is going to do good to both families!”
  • Upon watching the video, the Brown Family was of course aware of Harvey’s innocence, but they chose to neglect that as they all turned their attention to Patrick and Alice. It was clear that everyone agreed the marriage between the Brown and O’Niell Families would likely benefit their positions.
  • Ever since Aaron passed away, the company was handed over to Alice, while Hugo, Bobby, and Beatrice also shared the inheritance. However, what the sibling trio wanted the most was still the ownership of the Brown Group. Although the Brown Group was performing well in Vanstead City, they reckoned their business would grow stronger if they worked together with the O’Niell Family.
  • More importantly, Patrick wouldn’t have to marry into the Brown Family like Harvey did, considering his status. Instead, Alice would be married off, leaving her position as the company’s owner vacant and open. By then, the sibling trio would stand a chance to get their hands on the power if everything went as planned.
  • Therefore, Hugo, who was the eldest son in the Brown Family, stepped up and patted Harvey’s shoulder before he spoke solemnly. “Harvey, it’s been years since you married into the family, but you should know that Alice is not into you at all. Thus, it won’t make either of you happy if you insist on continuing the relationship. So if I were you, I’d leave the Brown Family right now.”
  • “That’s right! The reason you won’t leave us is because of our money, right? If you agree to leave the Brown Family, we will give you a few million as compensation so that you won’t have to worry about your living.”
  • “I believe you want what’s best for Alice too, so you should probably make way for her and Patrick. After all, sacrifice is also another means of showing your love for her. Anyway, I bet you know what I mean, right?”
  • After Hugo made his point, Bobby and Beatrice quickly echoed their brother’s words and threw their weight around as Harvey’s seniors. Apparently, they all reckoned that Harvey should prove his love for Alice by sacrificing his place for someone who could give her a happy life, thinking he didn’t deserve to stay with them any longer. Harvey didn’t seem to have a choice as everyone else in the Brown Family only looked at him in contempt.
  • In fact, Harvey had always been treated as a laughingstock that served to dampen the powers of Alice and her parents before this. Now that there was an opportunity to cast Harvey out of the family and marry Alice off, they were certain that the power would be in their bag soon.
  • Besides the fact that Hugo and Bobby were both capable candidates to lead the company, Harvey knew that there were men in each generation who were able to take over the company. Thus, he understood why they were not happy with Alice, the granddaughter, running the company. In the face of everyone’s intimidating gaze, Harvey glacially smiled as he was able to fathom what was on their mind, so he responded with a glacial look and questioned them. “This is between me and Alice. Who are you all to tell us what to do?!”
