Chapter 1 Divinity

  • “Alice, I know some friends in the police department, so I managed to get them to let this matter slide, but…”
  • Alice Brown was seen sitting with a glacial look on her face as she clenched her fists so hard that her fingers were showing red spots. At the same time, a man in a decent suit was sitting beside her, boasting about the matter while occasionally looking back at Harvey Smith, who was sitting at the back, with a sneer.
  • “Harvey is a man, Alice, but what has he really done for you? What has he given you? He doesn’t deserve to be your husband at all!”
  • Alice clamped her hands on the steering wheel with an apathetic expression on her face. After all, she’d never thought that a man would become a disgrace to her.
  • In fact, Harvey was taken into the Brown Family by Alice’s grandfather four years ago, not long before the old man betrothed her to Harvey. Upon marrying, Alice only treated Harvey as a nobody because he loafed around idly like a freeloader for the next four years. Therefore, she was disappointed with Harvey for fooling around outside with her money, thinking the man’s action would shame her and her family once word got out.
  • “Thank you so much, Mr. O’Neill! But this is my family’s business, so I’d like to take it into my own hands.” Alice held in her anger and glared at Harvey, who only responded with silence, while resentfully saying, “Harvey, you can be a useless piece of crap all you want because I don’t give a damn about that, but if you ever do that again, don’t expect me to clean your mess for you. Besides, I want you to remember this—I am your wife, so please give me the respect I deserve and stop fooling around until the day we divorce!”
  • Deep down, all Alice ever wanted was for Harvey to stay out of trouble because she didn’t expect him to contribute to her and the Brown Family. To her, his presence was hardly ever felt. At the same time, Patrick O’Neill took advantage of the situation to drive a wedge between the spouses, acting as if he cared about the matter, while lecturing Harvey, “If you still have a tiny bit of sense of shame within you, you should leave Alice right now. You don’t deserve to be her husband because you can’t give her the life she wants. Anyway, if this happens again, you won’t go unpunished.”
  • In the face of their aggression, Harvey only closed his eyes in response. When he opened them again, a glow flashed across his gaze shortly before he let out a roar. I can finally feel it now! After four years, my powers are back once again! Ever since Harvey was cast with an inhibitory spell, his powers hadn’t grown any further, and neither had his looks changed at all. Although he had maximized his powers through the Mystic Art of Breathing for the past ten thousand years, he still failed to build the foundation necessary for him to surpass his inhibition. On the contrary, his failure would always result in him passing out; it felt like a chain that was binding him in his subconscious mind. In the next few years, my powers will all be gone before I slowly regain them. Until then, one mistake is enough to cost me my soul and render my effort all in vain. Nobody can stand in my way on my path to enlightenment!
  • Despite Harvey’s desire to attain divinity, he was dismayed by his inability to even build a solid foundation. Because of that, he was pained by his discouragement as he couldn’t stop himself from dwelling on his failure in low spirits.
  • Four years ago, Harvey was actually just one step away from reaching his full potential when he tried to break the inhibitory spell by pushing himself further and further during his breathing practice, only to end up passing out in the end with all his effort going down the drain. Alice’s grandfather happened to show up and carried him home on his back, and after Harvey regained his senses, the old man got him to marry Alice.
  • In the past four years, Harvey didn’t make any progress on his pathway to enlightenment, and what was even worse was that the failure he suffered the last time took a toll on his health. Thus, he was rendered out of action and was forced to put up with the Brown Family.
  • Three hours ago, Harvey was on his way back home after having his meal when he felt a huge pain on his head and fainted. When he opened his eyes again, the first thing he saw was a lady who was lying right beside him in her birthday suit. Then, the police suddenly barged in and arrested him before he was taken back to the police station. Deep down, Harvey couldn’t remember anything that happened in the middle. Wait, what just happened? How did I even end up lying in bed with this lady? And how did the cops know to show up here?
  • On the other hand, Alice had no idea what happened to Harvey; she only deemed his bellow of rage a gesture to vent his anger. “Do you hold a grudge toward me, Harvey? Or do you think I’ve wronged you in any way?!”
  • “No!” Having regained his powers, Harvey no longer had to roll over so easily like he used to. Thus, he said with a deep voice, “Someone set me up!”
  • “Someone set you up?!” After everything that happened, you still won’t own up to your mistake. What’s worse is that you even came up with a lame excuse by shifting the blame to whoever that set you up! You would have earned my respect if you had admitted it like a man, Harvey.
  • “Harvey, I’m so disappointed in you!”
  • “Exactly! The evidence says it all, yet you still have the cheek to insist that you’re innocent. Are you saying that someone set you up by putting you in bed with a harlot? Come on! Be a man, would you? Have you no—” Nah! He’ll never talk his way out of something that will only get more and more ambiguous. Harvey, you’re not going to get away with what you’ve ‘done’! Thinking Harvey would continue to remain silent, Patrick was going to take advantage of that and attack him, only to be soon taken aback by the former’s unexpected response. Before Patrick could finish his words, a chilly gaze soon fell upon him.
  • “Excuse me. Who the hell are you?!” Harvey frowned and showed his backbone, finally standing up for himself after being bullied for all those years. I’m not who I used to be, and I’m going to show them that I’m not their lapdog.
  • In the meantime, Patrick was intimidated by Harvey’s temper, but he quickly regained his confidence when he thought that the latter was just a useless freeloader. All I have to do is just tell him who I am. I’d like to see how he’d react to that. Alright, it’s time to show Alice what kind of man this fella is! Patrick soon grunted and proceeded to introduce himself. “I am—”
  • “I don’t care who you are! You have until the count of three to make yourself scarce!”
  • How dare he tell me to make myself scarce! Patrick laughed in irony while staring at Harvey in a contemptuous manner. Since when does the Brown Family’s son-in-law have the guts to give me attitude?! Is he disrespecting me because he thinks the Brown Family has his back?! “Harvey, you’re just a lapdog who’s serving the Brown Family. Without them, you’re nothing, and you wouldn’t even be here talking to me!”
  • “Is that so?”
  • Harvey chuckled and strangled Patrick’s throat all of a sudden while lifting him up, as if the latter was a frightened little rabbit. With his glacial gaze fixed on Patrick, he warned him menacingly, “Next time, stay out of my hair and mind your goddamn business!” As soon as he finished his words, Harvey threw Patrick out of the car with a slight flick of his wrist.
  • Meanwhile, Alice was stunned by everything that happened so quickly. It was only when Patrick started moaning in pain that she began to make sense of what was going on. I suppose it’s true that even a worm will turn if pushed. Well, you look like a real man when you show your backbone at least. As for you, Patrick, you’re just nothing more than rich toff. I don’t need you to lecture my man anyway. Despite her thoughts, she was still mad at Harvey as she coldly said, “What’re you sitting there for?! Get out of my car too!”
