Chapter 12 Trouble in the Company

  • It all happened too fast.
  • Akela’s underlings watched as Harvey carried their boss like a plastic bag. Their expressions turned sour as they surrounded Harvey and cried, “Let The Wolf go! Or else!”
  • Harvey threw them a look that effectively silenced them on the spot. The only thing the crowd could perceive was a sudden peal of thunder, then everything darkened.
  • “Get lost!”
  • With the command, it was as if an explosion of Chi energy had produced waves that forced the twenty or so people to stagger backward.
  • Harvey turned his attention back to Akela. His eyes were cold, and there was an icy frown on his face as he said, “I don’t fancy stubborn people, and neither do I give a damn about your rules. Tell me the name of the mastermind, and your life will be spared. If not, you will die with them.”
  • Akela’s face was flushed as the temporary suffocation gripped his whole body in pain. He was a criminal, the type that would choose money over his own life, and he would never betray his clients.
  • However, as Akela heard Harvey’s voice, which sounded as if it came from Hades itself, even his soul couldn’t help but tremble. He was certain that this man would take his life for real.
  • Akela called himself a vicious criminal, but he felt like he was nothing compared to Harvey. The man in front of him was far more cruel and cold-blooded.
  • “I-I...”
  • Harvey loosened his grip and threw Akela onto the ground, after which the latter quickly gulped in breaths of air. Rules didn’t apply anymore when his life was at stake.
  • “Patrick O'Neill. It was him. He gave me 1 million to kill you.”
  • “Patrick.”
  • Harvey tasted the name on his tongue, a cruel smile coloring his lips. He glanced at Akela, who was lying on the ground, then gave him a smile.
  • “Good, at least you’re smart enough to save your life.”
  • To Harvey, Akela might look like a fierce and malicious man, but he meant nothing more than some small fry and was not worth his attention at all.
  • Since Harvey had promised that he would spare Akela, he stayed true to his word. He said in a low voice, “Don’t you dare try this again.”
  • With that, Harvey didn’t even spare them another glance as he strode toward the path.
  • After making sure that Harvey was out of sight, Akela’s underlings rushed over to him and helped him up. Trying to look tough, one of them said, “Wolf, that guy—”
  • Slap!
  • Before the man could finish, he was slapped in the face by his boss. Frustration flashed across his clouded eyes but was gone in an instant.
  • The reason that he, Akela, could survive in Vanstead was purely because of one principle he never violated, and that principle dictates that he must steer clear of people who should never be messed with.
  • Harvey was one such person.
  • ...
  • “Harvey, didn’t you go out to look for a job? Why did you come back in this sad state?”
  • After dealing with Akela, Harvey had gone back to the Brown Residence. Seeing his idle attitude, Polly couldn’t help but get angry with him and purposefully throw some mockery his way.
  • “Let me guess. No one wants to hire you, right? After all, you have no qualifications or skills, so you couldn’t even start trying to earn a living in Vanstead. Now is a good time to appreciate how nice the Brown Family has been to you.”
  • Harvey raised his head and glanced at Polly’s haughty demeanor, then frowned and said nonchalantly, “I’m still looking.”
  • “You’re still looking?! How many years has it been? Did you find anything at all? I know you just want to rely on Alice.”
  • Seeing that she got a response from Harvey, she started nagging. He had ticked her off the night before, and she still held it against him; this was why she wanted to vent a cruel word or two, so she could sleep at night.
  • “Harvey, it’s not that I look down on you—”
  • Polly had intended to continue, but Martin, who was sitting beside her, answered a call and immediately stood up from his seat. He said in a panic, “We have to go to the company right now. Some trouble came up, and Alice couldn’t even leave because she was mobbed.”
  • “What’s going on? How could something happen when everything has been okay?”
  • Polly gave up on nitpicking Harvey and followed Martin out in a rush. She looked back to find Harvey on their heels, so she questioned in disdain, “What are you tagging along for? Do you want to bring shame to the Brown Family?”
  • “I’m going to have a look.”
  • Harvey frowned as he talked. He did not want to keep talking with Polly, so he just gave her a simple answer. Polly, on the other hand, was persistent and said, “What are you going to do once you have a look? It’s a problem with Alice’s company, so what can you possibly do? Are you trying to get yourself ridiculed in addition to bringing shame to us?”
  • “Calm down. If Harvey wants to go, just let him. He’s Alice’s husband after all.”
  • Martin was panicking inside as he pulled Polly along while they walked out. After the three had gotten inside the car, they headed straight for The Brown Group.
  • “Where’s your president? Tell her to come out! Your company is selling us cheap counterfeits!”
  • “Get your president here! You employers should just shut up and leave. If you don’t cure my sister’s face today, I will make sure you get it!”
  • “Yeah, some beauty product this is! Your company is a liar! If you don’t resolve this today, I will sue you!”At this moment, the entrance of Ascent Group was swarmed by an angry group. A middle-aged woman with heavy makeup on her face was pointing fingers and shouting at the entrance. Pustules of various sizes had broken out on her face; a look at her could cause people to get sick.
  • Beside her, a few menacing men were beating away at the public utilities in front of the company, hollering their request to see the president of the company.
  • “Don’t think we don’t know that your president is a woman called Alice Brown or something. She was the one who released this beauty product. Tell her to come out!”
  • “I’m sorry, sir. President Brown is out of office today. If you have any problems, you can refer to our customer service manager.”
  • “Customer service manager my foot! They’re all just employers! Tell your president to come, or I won’t permit anyone to get past this door.”
  • Getting pushed aside, the receptionist held back tears from her reddening eyes and ran up to Alice. She reported with worry, “President Brown, they won’t leave or negotiate. They specifically wanted to see you.”
  • Alice was, of course, in office, but under these circumstances, it was clear that these people were here just to cause trouble instead of asking for a solution. This was why she had avoided them.
  • However, they really overdid it this time. They had blocked the entrance and kept shouting unpleasantries. People would crowd over and see what was going on, and before long, the problem would get blown out of proportion.
  • Alice pinched her eyebrows. Their company had newly released this beauty product just half a month ago. The product had undergone quality checks by the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency as well as the Industry and Commerce Agency, so it was definitely safe to use.
  • “Report this to the police. We can’t let it drag on.”
  • With determination in her eyes, Alice was decisive in her plan to counter this problem. However, just before she finished speaking, the two men beside her, Hunter and Harry, started snickering, as if taking delight in her misfortune.
  • “How could you report this to the police? They’ll think we did it because we’re in the wrong. If word of this gets out, do you know how much it would affect our company? Can you bear the responsibilities?”
  • “Hear, hear. This is a matter of credibility. You were the one who led the research and development of this beauty product. Now that people want to talk to you about it, you shouldn’t just hide away. Go on and get this problem solved.”
  • Alice frowned, her face slightly pale. Her cousins not only refused to help, but they were also even fanning the flames.
  • As Alice was hesitating on her next course of action, a receptionist named Luna Taylor was in a panic as she ran in, her face pale as she shouted, “Oh no! President Brown! T-They’re fighting outside!”
