- The sun rose earlier than usual, or so it seemed, as I stirred from bed. My body ached, but not from hard work this time. No, it was the dull ache of Adam’s recent nightly visits. He hadn’t come to my room in the past few nights, though—not since Maria returned from visiting her uncle. Somehow, his absence hurt more than his touch ever did.
