Chapter 4 Poker Face

  • Penny's mind was in turmoil.
  • She's clearly in love with Mr. Nolan.
  • But, why would she allow another woman to carry Mr. Nolan's child?
  • It's weird that the Nolans took the initiative to ask me to be a surrogate mother.
  • The Nolans can get any woman they want. Why would they choose this method? And they specifically request for me.
  • Penny was confused.
  • "Auntie Penny, are you still there?" Penny snapped out of it upon hearing Charlie's voice.
  • She was outside Charlie's room without her knowing.
  • Charlie was sitting on the bed and looking at her when she entered his room.
  • Penny's heart softened and gave him Wendy's gift. "You have a present."
  • "I don't want it!" Charlie didn't even look at it and lay back down. "You have to stay with me until I fall asleep!"
  • "Alright, I'll leave once you're asleep." Penny placed the gift on the bedside table and tucked in Charlie, "Would you like me to read you a story or sing a song?"
  • "Do you think I'm a child? I don't want it!" Charlie refused, but actually, he longed for it.
  • Don't all children want that before they sleep?
  • "You're also a child."
  • "I'm five years old now, not a child anymore!"
  • Penny chuckled when she saw Charlie glaring at her and she dimmed the light. "Alright, you're not a child. Goodnight."
  • Charlie closed his eyes and reminded her, "Don't sneak away!"
  • "I won't leave," Penny replied softly. She gently patted his chest and hummed a lullaby.
  • It was a peaceful night filled with motherly love.
  • Charlie drifted to sleep with a smile.
  • Tears welled up in Penny's eyes seeing her child sleeping.
  • She sobbed. It had been more than a month since her mother passed away, and she finally felt like she was alive again.
  • Great!
  • Nothing else mattered as long as I can stay with Charlie ...
  • Meanwhile, Samuel was standing at the door, observing Penny with a complex expression through the slightly open door.
  • The following two weeks passed by peacefully.
  • In the beginning, Charlie was critical and demanding towards Penny, but he stopped bothering her after noticing that she wasn't upset about it.
  • Penny cherished every moment with Charlie. She tried to understand his temperament and stayed by his side every time.
  • Charlie began to rely on her since he could feel her sincerity.
  • As for Samuel, despite seeing each other daily, she intentionally avoided him. There wasn't any interaction between them.
  • Life was simple and happy.
  • One evening.
  • "Daddy, are you taking me to Blood Island?" Penny had just reached Charlie's room and overheard his voice from inside.
  • Charlie was only 5 years old. Due to his high intelligence and resemblance to Samuel, he was usually reserved and rarely displayed his emotions except in front of Penny and Lucy.
  • Samuel patted Charlie's shoulder. "Go to bed early, we'll leave tomorrow morning."
  • "Okay, Daddy!"
  • Samuel left the room and noticed Penny standing outside. He ordered her with a straight face, "Pack his things." After taking a few steps. "You'll come with us to take care of Charlie."
  • "Alright," Penny answered joyfully.
  • She wasn't bothered about the itinerary of the trip, she was excited because it was her first trip with her son.
  • She couldn't help but jump up and down in place after Samuel left.
  • Little did she know, Samuel saw everything and he was stunned.
  • Samuel stared at Penny running into Charlie's room. This was the first time he had seen Penny displaying the side that a 23-year-old woman should have.
  • Penny began to rummage through Charlie's belongings. "Charlie, should I bring your swimsuit since we're going to an island?"
  • "Do you need sunscreen?"
  • "And, are you allergic to seawater?"
  • "Can you swim?"
  • "Do you ... "
  • "Auntie Penny, stop it! It's not like you're going on a trip. Why are you so excited?" Charlie interrupted Penny, who had been muttering to herself, and pulled the blanket over his head.
  • "Charlie, you'll suffocate." Penny stepped forward and pulled his blanket off.
  • She pinched his face when she saw him glaring at her. "Why are you always in a bad mood, you'll end up with a poker face like your dad when you grow up!"
  • Samuel was about to come in and talk to Charlie, his expression darkened when he heard that. "Poker face?"
  • A chill ran down Penny's spine when she heard that.
  • Turning around, she met Samuel's deep eyes.
