Chapter 7 Fired

  • In the office, Catherine packed her belongings, preparing to leave the hospital.
  • “Cath, it's not time to clock out yet. Why are you packing up so soon?” Lily asked, puzzled.
  • Catherine managed a bitter smile. “I've been let go,” she confessed, the injustice of the situation weighing heavily on her. Despite her efforts to save a life, she found herself facing dismissal. It was a bitter pill to swallow, leaving her feeling deeply wronged. She was tempted to call her father and complain, asking him to tear the hospital down, but she ultimately refrained.
  • “Why? How could they just fire you out of the blue?” Lily exclaimed, shocked by the news.
  • “You brought this upon yourself, meddling where you didn't belong,” William interjected, entering the room with an air of superiority. He leveled a disdainful look at Catherine before continuing with a hint of smugness, “Do you even realize who Mr. Kenneth is? Even if Finnian had been certain of success, it was beyond his authority to treat him. Besides, Finnian isn't even a licensed doctor. What gave him the right to intervene in Mr. Kenneth's case? Fortunately, he managed to cure him, albeit through sheer luck. But if he had failed, the repercussions for the hospital would have been severe.”
  • William was initially taken aback upon finding out Finnian had successfully cured Kenneth. However, upon reflection, he dismissed it as mere luck. After all, Finnian's training in traditional medicine was limited, and his skills couldn't possibly rival those of seasoned doctors.
  • Catherine's response was one of fury. “Dr. Foster, doctors should be compassionate. When a patient's life hangs in the balance, our duty is to do everything we can to save them, not to shirk responsibility like you!”
  • William bristled at her accusation, pointing a finger at her and coldly retorting, “What a load of nonsense. Cut the cr*p. Don't think I'm unaware of your motives. You were merely drawn to Kenneth's status, hoping to claim credit for his recovery. But things didn't go your way, and you ended up being dismissed.”
  • Lily intervened after grasping the situation, defending her colleague. “Dr. Foster, this is too much. Cath was only trying to help someone in need. It's one thing not to offer words of comfort after she was fired, but to make such callous remarks is uncalled for.”
  • “You're just a lowly nurse. You have no place to lecture me. Mark my words, I'll notify the head nurse this instant, and have you kicked out just like Catherine,” William fumed, his voice dripping with contempt.
  • “I...” Lily knew how hard it was to secure this job with such favorable conditions, so despite her annoyance, she had no choice but to swallow her anger.
  • “The one who should get lost is you!” A sudden, furious voice interrupted, and Matthew strode into the room, Claudia and several bodyguards in tow. “A hospital is founded on medical ethics, and I seriously doubt how someone as unethical as you became the department head. Looks like the hospital needs a thorough overhaul.”
  • “Mr. Hubbard, I...” William stammered, his confidence faltering as fear flashed across his face. He couldn't comprehend why Matthew and Claudia showed up.
  • “You've been dismissed. From now on, Catherine will be the new head of the internal medicine department,” Matthew announced solemnly. What happened just now had made it clear to him that Catherine was unafraid to stand up for what was right, prioritizing patient care above all else. Such noble medical ethics were precisely what the hospital needed.
  • “Mr. Hubbard, please, no...” William pleaded desperately, rushing forward to grovel at Matthew's feet, but with a wave of his hand, Matthew signaled his bodyguards to remove William from the premises.
  • “Mr. Hubbard, what is the meaning of this?” Catherine questioned coldly, still harboring resentment.
  • “Ms. Lowell, I apologize. I take full responsibility for what happened earlier. It was entirely my fault. Please forgive me...” Claudia spoke sincerely, her tone reflecting genuine regret. She went on to explain Kenneth's deteriorating condition and Finnian's request for her to apologize to Catherine.
  • Women are generally more sentimental and easily moved. Claudia's expression of remorse was genuine, and given Kenneth's critical condition, Catherine, being the kind person she was, chose forgiveness.
  • In the operating room, Finnian once again applied the Mystic Heaven Sixteen Needles technique to Kenneth, effectively stabilizing his condition.
  • As the treatment concluded, Finnian released a sigh of relief, conveying, “Mr. Hubbard, your son's condition has been brought under control. Going forward, I will administer an injection weekly for the next month. This regimen should ultimately eradicate his congenital heart disease.”
  • “Thank you.” A sense of immense relief swept over Matthew and Claudia, their countenances brightening with genuine smiles. Claudia, notably, set aside her usual demeanor, humbly expressing her gratitude to Finnian multiple times.
  • Matthew produced a check, inscribing the generous sum of ten million, and extended it towards Finnian. “Mr. Lambert, I owe you a great deal for aiding my son. Please accept this as a token of my gratitude.”
  • Without sparing a glance at the check, Finnian responded nonchalantly, “Mr. Hubbard, it's not a big deal. Moreover, I'm not exactly a doctor, so you don't need to pay me treatment fees.”
  • As Finnian spoke, he prepared to depart. He kept his master's teachings at heart, steadfastly believing that his medical skills should never be exploited for personal gain. While he might have considered accepting a modest token of appreciation, the vast zeros inscribed on Matthew's check made it abundantly clear that the amount was substantial, and he simply could not bring himself to accept it.
  • Matthew was taken aback. Finnian dressed plainly, suggesting that he might be facing financial difficulties. His refusal of the hefty medical fee spoke volumes about his integrity. This display of noble medical ethics stirred a hint of admiration from deep within Matthew's heart.
  • “Mr. Lambert, this is the Supreme Card from my company,” Matthew continued, reaching into his pocket and withdrawing a gold-plated card. “As long as you use this card at any establishment under Hubbard Group, your expenses will be covered. You might find it useful in the future, so I insist you take it.”
  • The Supreme Card was a rare and prestigious privilege, reserved solely for the direct relatives of the Hubbard family. The card Matthew handed to Finnian belonged to him personally, and by bestowing it upon Finnian, Matthew not only expressed his deep admiration for Finnian's character but also the immense value he placed on Finnian's exceptional medical skills. Since Newcove Hospital was among his business holdings, Matthew thought he might need Finnian's help in the future. He believed that establishing a connection with Finnian would undoubtedly yield numerous benefits.
  • After some hesitation, Finnian accepted the card. He and Matthew hailed from vastly different backgrounds, and he doubted he would have any use of this card. Yet, Matthew's gesture of generosity was hard to decline.
  • After completing the discharge procedures, Finnian hailed a taxi and headed home with his family.
  • Later that evening, Finnian's father revealed to him the identity of the individual who had harmed his mother: a wealthy scion named Albert. The family was prominent in the clothing and leather business, boasting assets worth several hundred million. Commoners like Nathan simply couldn't afford to offend people of their caliber.
  • Finnian silently resolved to seek justice for his mother the following day.
