Chapter 8 How Dare You!

  • Nix stared Kenn in the eye. "I've always been a firm believer of justice, and I have never used my strength to bully the weak. Why don't you tell everyone here why I'm here to look for you?"
  • As he spoke, he tightened his grip around Kenn's neck.
  • Kenn felt the grip on his neck become tighter, and he struggled to breathe. "Yes, yes! I'll speak! I'm the one who's at fault. I've harmed your parents and your younger sister. It's my fault. I'm so sorry. Can you please let me go?"
  • "How did you harm them, and why did you do so? Tell me every detail."
  • "I… I…" Kenn stammered. He could not bear to finish the sentence. Even he thought what he did was inhuman.
  • He had always acted like a gentleman in front of the guests. If he told the truth, not only would his reputation be ruined, his family would be affected as well.
  • Howard understood that. He interjected, "Your name is Nix Jaeger, right? Mr. Jaeger, I don't know what grudge you have against my son, but it's my birthday today, and I don't wish to see anyone get hurt on this happy occasion. If you can let my son go, we can sit down and talk this through peacefully. I can promise you that I'll give you the justice you want for your family."
  • The people in the crowd were impressed by Howard's magnanimity. Even though Nix had beaten up his second son and was choking his first son, Howard was still able to maintain his composure and negotiate with the aggressor.
  • "Deputy Mayor Zweiger is so generous. If I were him, I would've called every gangster I know to kill that guy!"
  • "No wonder he's the deputy mayor. I'm sure that he does a good job managing the city!"
  • Someone even yelled at Nix, "Hey, kid, you ought to treasure the chance Deputy Mayor Zweiger is giving you!"
  • The people in the crowd did not know that Howard was afraid that once the truth was exposed, his family's reputation and his career would be affected.
  • Many of the guests in attendance might not be as wealthy and influential as the Zweiger family, but there were some guests, such as Ealon Proust from the provincial government office, that Howard could not afford to offend.
  • All Howard could do now was to control the situation by extending his generosity to the troublemaker. Later, after the party ended, he would hire some people to make Nix's life a living hell.
  • Nix smirked, unconvinced by Howard's flowery words. "Well said, Howard Zweiger. Your family has done nothing but evil, yet you make it sound like I'm the troublemaker! Heh!"
  • While grasping firmly onto Kenn's neck, he pinched Kenn's ear with his other hand and pulled downward like tearing a piece of cotton candy.
  • Instantly, blood poured from the wound, and Kenn gritted his teeth and screamed in pain.
  • "Speak!" Nix roared.
  • "Yes! Yes! I'll speak!" Kenn could not withstand the pain.
  • "I… I hired some people to capture your parents and younger sister and chained them in their house. They lived amid their filth for a week, and I deprived them of food and water. Every day, my men beat them up. I did that because I fell in love with your wife… No, your ex-wife Whitney. When I first met her, it was love at first sight…"
  • He did not omit the smallest detail when he described how he had made Whitney fall for him, and later, how he had conspired with Whitney and Philip to set Nix up, and why he had tortured Nix's family.
  • By now, Whitney, Tony, and those from the Sonheim and Zweiger families glared at Nix with utter hatred. The gazes from the crowd on them had turned from admiration to disgust and anger.
  • If looks could kill, Nix would have died a hundred times over.
  • Nix ignored the angry glares and continued to interrogate Kenn.
  • "What else? What did you tell your men to do? Why is my younger sister in the hospital?"
  • "It's because I got my men to beat her up in front of your parents, and they used a dagger to slice her flesh. She bit her tongue in an attempt to end her own life, and that's why…"
  • Everyone exclaimed in horror when they heard that.
  • What Kenn said earlier had left them in disgusted shock. Now they found out that Kenn had gotten his men to slice up an innocent young woman in front of her parents…
  • Such cruel acts were simply inhuman!
  • They finally understood why Howard had extended his magnanimity toward Nix earlier. He was afraid that the truth would be exposed.
  • At the same time, they also empathized with Nix for causing trouble on this occasion.
  • Anyone who had a shred of justice in their blood could not tolerate such heinous acts.
  • Their disgust toward Nix had turned into admiration.
  • If they were in his shoes, they might not have the courage or determination to stand up against the Zweiger family.
  • On the other hand, their impression of the Zweiger family sank to a new low. They would have stood up and helped Nix if not that they were afraid of Howard's influence.
  • Nix stared Howard in the eye. "You said you want to restore justice to me, right? Now that everyone here has heard what your son has done to me, what kind of justice can you give me?"
  • Howard looked like he was going to explode. "Nonsense!"
  • He turned to address the crowd. "I can vouch with my reputation that my son has never done that! He's only saying that because Nix here is threatening his life! It's all a made-up story!"
  • Not many people in the crowd were convinced by Howard's lies.
  • Howard's face contorted when he saw the crowd's reaction. He knew that his family's reputation was utterly ruined.
  • He glared at Nix and asked sternly, "Who are you, and why do you have a grudge against our family? Who instructed you to do this?"
  • Nix smirked and shook his head.
  • If Howard had stayed true to his word and granted Nix the justice he wanted, Nix would only have to seek revenge from Kenn and leave the rest of his family unscathed.
  • Now that the truth had been laid bare to Howard, not only did he not show any guilt, but he had even tried to pin the fault on Nix. If that was how the Zweiger family was going to treat Nix, Nix did not have any more reservations.
  • "If you're not going to give me justice, I'll find my own justice! My principle in life is very simple: Blood shall be repaid by blood!"
  • At that instant, the temperature in the front hall seemed to have dropped below freezing.
  • Howard shuddered. "What… What do you want?" he asked in a trembling voice.
  • Nix smirked. "It's your birthday today, and it's also the engagement party for your son and my ex-wife. I'm going to give all of you a wonderful present you won't be able to forget."
  • As he said that, he tightened his grip on Kenn's neck. Kenn's face turned red, and he instinctively opened his mouth and stuck his tongue out.
  • Nix pinched his tongue. "My sister nearly lost her life because she bit her tongue. As a show of my gratitude, I shall present to you your son's tongue."
  • He turned to look at the people from the Sonheim family. "His son, your future husband and son-in-law."
  • The people from the Sonheim and Zweiger families were horrified to hear that.
  • "You… No!" Howard screamed.
  • Justin Zweiger, Howard's brother, took a step forward and yelled sternly. "How dare you!"
  • "Why won't I?" Nix said coldly.
  • "Come in!" Justin commanded.
  • After a flurry of footsteps, about a hundred elite bodyguards dressed in black suits filled the front hall.
  • Justin had already made a call on his way downstairs because he expected something bad to happen. Even though he made the call on short notice, he managed to summon about a hundred people to his aid.
  • The bodyguards surrounded Nix, Anvil, and Vice immediately.
  • "If you dare injure my nephew, I can assure you three that you won't leave this place alive!" Justin said sternly.
