Chapter 2 Prelude to Chaos

  • Kenn's lackeys turned around and received the shock of their lives.
  • How imposing!
  • Even though they were experienced gangsters, and some of them had even killed innocent people in cold blood, they could not help but shudder when they sensed the murderous aura emanating from the sudden intruder.
  • They wondered how many people that person had killed.
  • "Who are you?" The leader of the men gulped and asked, pointing his dagger at Nix.
  • Nix looked at his parents and unconscious younger sister behind those men as though he did not hear what the man said. He felt a bomb go off in his brain, and his anger caused him to stagger and nearly fall over.
  • "Renée! Father! Mother!" Nix screamed hoarsely, and his body trembled violently. Blood-red tears fell from his eyes.
  • His parents had always been humble and down-to-earth. They had never offended anyone, and they would bear it quietly even if they were bullied. His younger sister was gentle and innocent, and she could not bear to harm an insect.
  • How dare those people treat them like this! I am the Sovereign of the Night, but the members of my family are treated like animals!
  • Nix clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles almost broke.
  • All these people have to die!
  • Martha Jaeger, Nix's mother, shuddered when she heard that voice. She raised her head abruptly.
  • "It's you, Nix! You're really here!"
  • Her shock turned into excitement when she saw her son, and life returned to her emotionless eyes.
  • She hit the wall hard. "Run away, Nix!"
  • Even though her life was a living hell, she did not stop worrying about her son's safety. She did not want those bad guys to injure her son, whom she had waited day and night to come home, and she hit the wall to distract them.
  • Instantly, Kenn's lackeys knew that the intruder was Furton and Martha's son, as well as the husband of their boss's lover.
  • The leader of the men grimaced and approached Nix with the dagger.
  • "You must be Nix Jaeger, right? If you know what's good for you, then you'd…"
  • Boom! When Nix turned his gaze on the leader of the men, his fury surged forth from his eyes like an exploding volcano.
  • The leader of the men seemed to have seen a sea of blood and a mass of crawling bodies in those eyes. He shrieked in fear and dropped the dagger on the floor.
  • "No, don't…" he begged.
  • "Die!" Nix roared as he threw a punch. His fist seemed to be glowing with fire.
  • Bang! The head of the man exploded like a piñata.
  • "Ahhh!" The two other men shrieked because they had never seen such a terrifying display of strength before. One of them fell on the floor and wet his pants, while the other fell to his knees and begged for his life.
  • "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to do this! Kenn Zweiger is the one who ordered us! His father is the vice mayor of Southvane, and we dared not disobey his orders. Please be merciful and spare our lives! Pl…"
  • "Die!"
  • Nix thrust his palm from above, which fell on the man like a mountain. Instantly, he was reduced to a pile of mincemeat.
  • He then took a quick step forward and stomped on the other man, and a hole appeared in that man's chest.
  • Nix continued running to the corner of the room and sliced the heavy chains with his bare hands. Then, he split the iron collars around his parents' necks into two.
  • Then, he ran toward his sister amid the puddle of blood, picked her up, and roared toward Luna behind him, "We go to the hospital now! Bring my parents along too!"
  • Outside the operating room, Nix stared unblinkingly at the red light without saying a word. Words could not express the anxiety he felt in his heart.
  • Luna came over to him and said, "Your parents have been cleaned and treated. They're fine, but they won't rest until they receive news of what happened to your sister."
  • At that moment, the door to the operating room opened. Nix rushed up to the doctor.
  • "Doctor, how is my sister? Is she…"
  • "Don't worry, the young lady is safe. I can't say the same if you brought her in a few minutes later. I'm afraid I won't be able to help her by then. However…"
  • The last word from the doctor's mouth made Nix nervous again.
  • "However what?"
  • "She bit her tongue too hard. There'll be a scar, and she might suffer from speech impediments. Sigh… What happened? Didn't you manage to protect her?"
  • "Yes. I failed to protect her."
  • Nix lowered his head guiltily, and tears welled up in her eyes. Anger and pain surged in his heart.
  • He took a deep breath and went to the room, where his parents were.
  • "Nix, how is Renée? Is she okay?" Furton and Martha asked nervously.
  • "Renée's fine," Nix said and fell to his knees.
  • "I'm sorry, Father, Mother. I've caused you two to suffer!" He said hoarsely and began to wail.
  • So what if I'm the Sovereign of the Night? I wasn't there when my parents were bullied and tortured. I should have gone home earlier! Why did I delay? I should have gone home no matter how busy I was!
  • Nix could not stop blaming himself.
  • Nix's head struck the floor repeatedly until blood was beginning to appear on his forehead.
  • "Don't be like that, my son. Please get up."
  • "We're happy that you're back."
  • With tears in their eyes, Furton and Martha helped Nix to get up. They huddled together and cried their hearts out.
  • They calmed down after some time. Nix stayed in the room until his parents fell asleep before leaving.
  • "I've already gotten some people to clean up your house. What's the next step?" Luna asked.
  • Nix was looking at his younger sister sound asleep through the glass window. He could not forget how she had been lying unconscious in the puddle of blood, or how the doctor had said she might suffer from speech impediments in the future.
  • After a long time, he said, "Gather everyone in the Nightdwellers. Someone has to pay for what they did to my family!"
  • Even though the Zweiger family was powerful in Southvane, Nix did not have to summon the entire organization to deal with them.
  • The last time Nix gathered the entire organization for a mission was two years ago when they were called to save a Midsom delegation team from a foreign militant group.
  • That day, three thousand Nightdwellers killed their enemies without prejudice. An entire militant group the size of a small country was wiped out, which sent shockwaves around the entire world.
  • There were two reasons why Nix wanted to mobilize the entire organization this time. Other than seeking revenge for his parents and younger sister, he also wanted to send a message to the higher authorities of Midsom: Nix Jaeger is back, and he is angry. No one will be able to save the person he wants dead.
  • Once the government gets the message, it would be a lot easier for Nix to deal with the Zweiger family or wipe out those who had wronged him.
  • Luna relayed the command to the Nightdwellers' headquarters. Five minutes later, everyone in the organization received the message.
  • In an instant, several thousand people were mobilized.
  • They abandoned their tasks on hand without hesitation and made their way to the nearest airport. From there, they chartered a private airplane or took the next flight to Midsom. For those already in Midsom, they drove at the fastest possible speed toward Southvane.
  • Many governments and organizations around the world were alerted when they noticed the terrifying organization spring into action.
  • "Wow, those lunatics are mobilizing again! Who are they annihilating this time?"
  • "Bolster our defenses! The terrorists are coming! Make sure our border guards don't even blink when keeping watch. Report to the authorities once a Nightdweller is spotted!"
  • "Quick, get our negotiators to contact the Nightdwellers! We'll pay any price, as long as they stay away from our territory!"
  • Many organizations and governments were fearful. The most powerful countries did not descend into chaos, but they watched every move with a close eye.
  • They breathed a collective sigh of relief when they found that the Nightdwellers' destination was Midsom.
  • "This'll be interesting. That plague is descending upon Midsom."
  • "I wonder what earthshaking news will come out of Midsom this time? Haha!"
  • "Doesn't Midsom always say they're a mighty country? We'll see how they deal with this bunch of lunatics!"
  • At the same time, the information was labeled as an S-level top secret and delivered to the central military headquarters of Midsom.
  • Johnson Yates, the commander-in-chief, summoned an emergency meeting. The commanders of each military region joined in the video call.
  • "Can someone tell me what's going on? The Nightdwellers have always shared amicable relations with Midsom. What could make them mobilize their full force? Who is their target?" Johnson asked grimly.
  • It was not because the Nightdwellers were incredibly destructive whenever they were serious. Rather, the leader of the organization was from Midsom, and the military had always treated the Nightdwellers as one of their own.
  • Johnson wanted to get to the bottom of the matter so he could resolve it peacefully.
  • No one said anything.
  • The people in the meeting knew that the Nightdwellers were led by someone from Midsom. Even though the organization was considered a terrorist group by some governments, they had never done anything harmful to Midsom. In fact, the Nightdwellers had been secretly helping them.
  • They were also confused why the Nightdwellers would be stirring up trouble within Midsom territory.
  • Johnson slammed the table angrily. "Can't anyone give me an explanation?"
  • He looked toward Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Lowry. "What do you think, Vincent? You've met the leader of the Nightdwellers before. I'd like to hear your opinion."
  • Vincent was deep in thought. When he heard Johnson addressing him, he said seriously, "The Nightdwellers definitely would not bring harm to Midsom. I can guarantee that. Do you remember the incident two years ago, when our delegation was held hostage by foreign rebels? When the Nightdwellers received news about it, he gathered the entire organization, declared war on those rebels, and wiped them out within two days. After that incident, no one dared to cause harm to our diplomats. I met the leader that time and we had a long chat. He is a very patriotic person, and he…"
  • Suddenly, Vincent slapped his thigh as though he had just remembered something. "Ah, I know! That time, Nix Jaeger asked me to take care of his family in Southvane. I did what he wanted for a while, making sure that no harm came to their family. However, I have been caught up with work recently and neglected them. Mr. Jaeger must be back in the country and realizes that his family is in trouble. This is all my fault!"
  • He stood up and saluted Johnson. "Sir, I claim all responsibility in this incident, and I shall go to Southvane to deal with it myself!"
  • The powerful military officer immediately set off toward his destination.
