Chapter 3 They Shall Despair!

  • Nix remained outside the hospital room, refusing to leave his family behind.
  • He had already calmed down, and he had been wondering where his wife had been during the period his parents and younger sister were tortured.
  • Even if she had no more feelings for him, why did she not help his parents when they had been nothing but friendly to her?
  • While he was deep in thought, he heard a feminine voice call him.
  • "It's you, Nix! You're back!"
  • Surprised, Nix turned his head to face the person who had called him.
  • It was Whitney Sonheim, his wife.
  • Standing next to her was a young man dressed in branded clothing with an arrogant expression on his face.
  • He was Tony Sonheim, Whitney's younger brother.
  • Behind the two people were four bodyguards standing in attention.
  • Nix had not seen his wife for five years. She was dressed in new clothes and expensive jewelry, and there were no signs of aging. It was obvious that she had been living a good life.
  • Looking at her demeanor and the people she brought with her, Nix could guess what his wife wanted.
  • "How did you know that I'm back?" Nix asked.
  • "Shut your f*cking mouth! My sister wants to renege on her marriage with you! Get the f*ck over here and sign this divorce agreement!" Tony said impatiently while beckoning toward Nix like calling a dog over.
  • Nix's gaze turned cold in an instant.
  • Five years ago, the young man treated Nix as his idol. He followed Nix everywhere begging for scraps like a dog.
  • Today, the dog was biting back.
  • Nix was not in a rush to unleash his temper. He stared straight at Whitney and asked, "Is that the case?"
  • Whitney said nothing, but her impassive demeanor seemed to have made her stance clear.
  • Nix was thoroughly disappointed with his wife. Not only did she not help his family when they were in trouble, but he did not expect the woman to be so cruel toward him. After all, Whitney had always given him the impression of being gentle and innocent.
  • Five years ago, Nix was the fastest rising star in Southvane, and Whitney was at the peak of her beauty. Whitney fell in love with Nix at first sight and began to woo him to the best of her ability.
  • Once they started dating, she tried very hard to get him to marry her. Nix could not stand her advances and accepted her proposal. The marriage might be rushed, but Whitney had been a model wife, and Nix gradually accepted her.
  • With his support, the Sonheim family rose in wealth and influence, eventually becoming one of the most powerful families in Southvane, and Whitney shared some of the glory.
  • Even when Nix was hiding abroad, he never stopped helping the Sonheim family. Instead of giving money to the family directly, he channeled funds to their family business through covert means, hoping that Whitney would treat his parents well if her family was taken care of.
  • Now, he realized that he was wrong. Whitney's innocent façade was hiding something sinister underneath.
  • Whitney handed a divorce agreement to Nix and said coldly, "I don't know where you've been for the past five years, but you should know that we're no longer a good match for each other. After you sign this agreement, I'll give you a million dollars."
  • Nix smirked. "A million dollars? How generous of you! Do you think you can dismiss me with a mere million dollars? Don't forget that I'm the one who supported your family. Without me, your family is nothing!"
  • "Hey, you'd better watch your d*mn mouth!" Tony yelled. "My sister is a self-made woman, and she was the one who helped our family. Do you think you're so great? Even if you are, that's all in the past! Look at you now. You look like a panhandler. What right do you have to negotiate with my sister? You should be happy that you're receiving a million dollars! You'd better be f*cking grateful. Otherwise, I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget!"
  • Nix continued to stare Whitney in the eye. "Do you know what happened to my family?"
  • "Does it matter if I do? So what if I don't?" Whitney replied coldly. "I no longer have feelings for you, and I don't care what happens to your family."
  • Nix could feel his anger rising. "I didn't expect you to be so fickle. If you married me for my fortune, so be it, but my parents treated you as their own daughter! They gave you everything you wanted and attended to your every whim. My younger sister also trusted you and treated you as her elder sister. I can't believe that you're so heartless!"
  • Seeing that Whitney remained unmoved, Nix suddenly thought of something. "Unless… you conspired with Philip to set me up. Other than Kenn, you were also involved! You've already betrayed me since then. Is that it?"
  • A hint of panic appeared in Whitney's eyes when she heard that. "It's all in the past now, Nix. You should leave it behind you. Your family didn't want to let go of the past, and look what happened to them."
  • "So it's you!" Nix roared furiously.
  • Nix knew Kenn was somehow involved in Philip's plot, but he did not expect Whitney to be complicit as well. Whitney's non-committal answer proved to Nix that his guess was correct. Moreover, she did not seem the least bit guilty about it.
  • Nix took an intimidating step forward.
  • Whitney stumbled backward in panic. "What… What do you want?" she asked.
  • Tony stepped in between the two and yelled, "Hold the f*ck right there and know your place! If you take another step forward, you'll regret you were even born!"
  • Nix ignored him and took another step forward.
  • Tony was furious. "F*ck you! Die!"
  • He threw a punch at Nix's face.
  • Nix abruptly turned his head and glared at him. The rage in his eyes was like the eternal fires of hell and sent chills to Tony's very soul. His knees went weak, and he fell sitting on the floor.
  • The four bodyguards moved into action and charged toward Nix.
  • "Halt!" Nix roared.
  • His voice was like a command which sent the bodyguards' heads spinning. They fell to their knees in unison.
  • Whitney's face went pale. The bodyguards she had hired with a lot of money stood no chance in front of Nix.
  • She lifted her hand and said fearfully, "Don't come near me, Nix. You're worth nothing now. If you lay a finger on me, you can't afford to pay the price!"
  • Tony added, "Nix, my wife is about to be engaged to Kenn. If you dare harm her, you'll die in an unmarked grave!"
  • Nix planted his foot on Tony's mouth to shut him up. Then, he glared coldly at Whitney and continued his advance until she was backed into a corner.
  • He grimaced contemptuously while glaring at the shivering woman. "Don't worry, I won't lay a finger on you. That will only dirty my hands. Moreover, you would've been let off too easily if I killed you."
  • He snatched the divorce agreement from Whitney's hands, signed his initials on the agreement, and threw it at the woman's face. "You want out of this marriage, right? Fine. From now on, I disown you!"
  • Those words left an impression on Whitney's soul.
  • Whitney lifted her head and said angrily, "What… did you say?"
  • "You heard it right. I disown you! One as heartless as you doesn't deserve to be my wife or part of my family! You want to marry Kenn Zweiger, right? Go ahead and marry him. I'll prepare two grave plots for you and for him!"
  • He pointed down the corridor. "Now, get lost!"
  • Whitney was furious. "How dare you say that to me! Who do you think you are, Nix Jaeger? I admit that you're not bad five years ago, but what about you now? You're penniless and worthless. I'm like a queen to you, you destitute panhandler! It's your honor to be addressed by me! How dare you disown me?"
  • Nix smirked. "You don't know what you're talking about, Whitney Sonheim. You've been blind and petty. Now, you're as insignificant to me as the dust on my shoes! Very soon, I'll end what you started five years ago, and I will take back everything that I've given you. You should treasure your last moments. Now get lost!"
  • Whitney's face was red with anger. She gritted her teeth. "You… You…"
  • Nix pointed at the door. "Don't make me repeat myself!"
  • Whitney stamped her foot. "Fine! We shall see about that, Nix Jaeger! You'll regret what you said to me today!"
  • She helped her younger brother up and left the scene.
  • Back in the car, Tony was both angry and scared when he recalled what Nix said.
  • He did not know where Nix had gone for the past five years, though he hated himself for being cowardly.
  • "Why should we leave just like this, Whitney? That worthless piece of sh*t humiliated us! I can't take it lying down!"
  • Whitney narrowed her gaze and said coldly, "Kenn will take revenge on our behalf! I'm sure Nix will definitely look for Kenn. He thinks he's all that just because he's been away for a few years! I'd like to see how he'll die when going against the Zweiger family!"
  • Back in the hospital, Luna returned as soon as Whitney left. "I've hired three experienced caretakers, just as you requested, Mr. Jaeger. They'll be here shortly. If you're not satisfied with their performance, I can replace them any time."
  • Nix nodded. "Stop all funding to the Sonheim family and collect every single cent given to them, plus interest! I want the Sonheim family to go bankrupt within seven days!"
  • Luna nodded. "Yes, Mr. Jaeger."
  • As one of the most feared shadow organizations in the world, the Nightdwellers were backed with massive financial resources.
  • Even a company a hundred times bigger than Sonheim Corporation would easily fold to the pressure from the Nightsdwellers!
  • After relaying Nix's orders to the headquarters, Luna handed a stack of documents to Nix and continued, "Here is the information about the Zweiger family, just as you requested. Tonight, Kenn's father, Howard, will be celebrating his 55th birthday at his elder brother's mansion. I've also heard that your wife… I'm sorry, ex-wife, will be formally engaged with Kenn tonight. Also, the first wave of our people will be here tonight."
  • Nix narrowed his gaze. "Very well. Tonight, the Zweiger family shall know despair."
