Chapter 5

  • Chapter 5
  • The three men, without delay, jumped off Victor, whose face was filled with bruises. His jaw had swollen up, causing his mouth to look as if there was something inside of it.
  • His breathing was so fast that everyone there was hearing it. There was a little relief in his voice after the men stopped even though he was in pain.
  • Victor sat up, his hand on his chest, trying to calm his breath.
  • “You're very lucky I was called or you would have paid more than what your friend had taken.” Nicholas stepped forward and said, his expression still cold.
  • He then turned to his bodyguards, “Let's go.” They nodded in synchronization.
  • They were about to leave when Brown rushed forward, “I'm sorry, Mr. Nicholas, for the trouble caused. I sincerely apologized on his behalf.” He said with a heavy heart, his voice laced with emotions.
  • Nicholas looked at him and replied indifferently, “Sorry won't change anything, Brown. Your useless employee almost killed me in your office and you saw it….”
  • Brown interjected, “That's why I'm apologizing on his behalf. Please, show us mercy, and let's go back to our discussion on the deal."
  • Nicholas’ expression remained cold, “You're forgiven for employing such a foolish, stinky man like him, but as for the business deal, it's over!”
  • “Ahh!" Brown shouted, his mouth hung wide open. "Please, Mr. Nicholas, it hasn't gotten to this. Please, don't do this to me. I promise you that that useless man has been fired. He's no longer part of the workers here. Please.”
  • Brown was genuinely begging, his eyes slowly turning red. It was a business deal worth thousands of dollars.
  • Back in the office before now, Nicholas and Brown were negotiating about the hotel suites where the CEO of the Blackstone Group was planning on renting the whole place for a week without anyone entering the environment.
  • However, Nicholas was arrogant enough to even give him an attentive ear as he stormed into the car. With everyone settled inside, the two sleek black cars began to drive off from the garden.
  • “Dammit!” Brown ran his hand in his hair in frustration. “That bastard had destroyed everything I was on the verge of sealing. Fuck him and whoever gave birth to him.” He spat with his fumed face. "I'm not going to forgive him. He must pay dearly."
  • With his clenched fist, face, and feet, he turned and walked inside. “You! You see what your stupid friend had caused?” He shot, pointing fingers at Victor who was still battling to regain himself. “Henceforth, you and he are both sacked. And you're very lucky you have received your payment or else….”
  • He left in anger without adding further words.
  • Meanwhile, by the side of the road under a tree that provided a shield, Daniel was sitting under it, with his face pale like a sheet of paper.
  • His hand was placed under his jaw, his face occupied with frustration and tears as he stared at different luxurious cars that were passing on the road.
  • “Am I a cursed child? Why does everything seem cursed? Am I not trying my best to become like many successful men out there? Or is my own suffering not yet up to what they all suffered? What's….”
  • Daniel was muttering bitterly to himself but was suddenly snapped out as his phone began to ring inside his pocket. He wiped off his teary eyes and tried to steady his voice before dipping his hand into his pocket and pulling out his phone.
  • Immediately, his eyes glanced at his phone's screen, and his anger increased. It was William who was calling him.
  • “What does this old man want from me?” He asked himself, feeling frustrated. Furious, he reluctantly hit the ‘answer’ button.
  • “What do you want from me? Why do you keep troubling my life?” He immediately asked right after he picked up the call.
  • “How dare you leave the cafeteria without cleaning the whole mess?” A deep, angry voice came from the other end.
  • “That's because you have chosen not to pay me! Besides, it's not a difficult task, you can just do it yourself.” He shot back and without waiting for any reply, he abruptly ended the call and pocketed the phone.
  • His eyes flooded with tears again as images of how he had been a cleaner, cleaning different houses and hotels and more vividly played in his mind. “Is this how I'm going to live my life as a cleaner and delivery man till I die?”
  • As he was lost in thought for the second time, his phone began to ring again. Without even looking at it, he screamed, “Why does this old man keep disturbing me?”
  • He frowned, “I will have to block his number right away.” He concluded and pulled the phone out.
  • Just as his eyes caught a glimpse of the phone's screen, his angry expression turned into a surprised one as he realized it wasn't Mr. William who was calling.
  • “Mr. Lucas?” He muttered in surprise. “Why is he calling me?”
