• “ Jason, what are you doing here?” Vanessa’s voice rang out like a bell dipped in honey. She practically skipped toward him, all sweetness and light. “Didn’t I tell you not to pick me up?”
• “I couldn’t help it,” Jason said, slipping his tailored jacket over her shoulders like he’d done it a thousand times. “It’s cold out, and you’re wearing next to nothing. You’ll catch a chill.”
• I leaned against the marble wall behind me, the cold sinking into my spine. My balance was unsteady, the wine I’d downed earlier settling like fire in my veins. And yet, nothing burned quite like this moment like watching her bask in affection that used to be mine.
