• It had been weeks since I found her on the riverbank. Weeks since I had plunged into that icy water, pulling her limp body from the current, her breath so shallow I thought she was gone. And yet, she clung to life. Barely. Long enough for me to carry her back to the estate. Now, she lay in my bed, wrapped in silk and linens, unmoving, her chest rising and falling ever so slightly, a faint reminder that she was still alive.
