Chapter 8 "Nanny"
- Matt: Well, Victoria just left and I have no idea how to deal with kids, I just hope Cami sleeps until tomorrow.
- Without appetite, I head to the kitchen in search of ice, Kim is sitting reading a magazine, and as soon as she sees me enter, she jumps out of her seat like a spring. Damn, was that respect or fear? Ignoring her reaction, I go in search of a glass and approach the fridge to fill it with ice, pretending not to have seen her.
- "Sir, do you need anything? Dinner will be ready in an hour."
- "If I need something, you'll know " I don't want to see her, why is she afraid of me?""
- "Of course, sir."
- "Come to think of it, I'm going to need something to eat for Victoria's sister, she said she loved red jelly and could eat a sandwich, prepare that and then go home, that will be all for today."
- "Yes, sir " 'yes, sir,' wow, she seems mechanical, I don't understand why it bothers me so much, and just now."
- With my usual furrowed brow, I leave the kitchen and head to my office, I go straight to the bar and see two glasses already occupied, mine, completely empty, and Victoria's... Victoria only took a small sip, I need her to come back soon, I take a couple of ice cubes and pour them into her glass, I don't know what's wrong with me, I need her to come back.
- Determined to do things right, I go to my desk and write to Sue. Victoria needs to spend some time with her friends, and erase that horrible night from her mind. I hope it helps. If it weren't for Victoria being here, my vacation would have ended before it even started, what awaits me when I return to the office is just problems, I know it, and I still have to deal with that damn Miller, I have to find out who's giving him orders, if he thinks I'm too stupid to realize his... resentment, then he doesn't know me at all.
- An hour later, I am immersed in a hundred reports that I have to write requesting solutions and all that crap, what was I thinking when I came up with the idea that the best way to have everything under control was in writing? Right now, it's a nuisance, I have sent more than 300 pages to the printer to read, I can't concentrate and that has never happened to me, it's so... frustrating.
- Desperate to concentrate, I don't realize that I am pulling my hair until a small shadow in the dim light of my office speaks, with a hoarse voice and a certain fear.
- "Mr. R, does your head hurt?"
- I jump out of my chair and go to the switch that lights up the whole place. Little Cami is standing by the door, barefoot and with cheeks too red, maybe she's sick... What do I do if she is? Do I give her an aspirin?
- "Does she also have to go to Dr. Eric? He is good " damn, just what I needed.""
- "Cami, do you feel okay? What are you doing out of bed?"
- "I can't find my sister... her house, it's so big! " oh no, she's going to cry.""
- "She... she will be back soon."
- "She left me alone? " god, she's crying, what do I do? This is awkward.""
- "She had to go out for a moment, she said she would be back very soon."
- "Where did she go? What if mom doesn't let her come back?"
- " I wouldn't allow it, she's with Evan, do you know him?"
- " Who is he?"
- " A friend of your sister."
- " But she said she wouldn't leave me alone."
- " I'm here, do you want to eat something?"
- " I want my sister!"
- And she started crying inconsolably, at the top of her lungs, this is making me nervous. Not knowing what to do, I start pacing around the office, trying to think of what to do to calm her down. What do I tell her? What do I do to make her stop crying? Damn!
- " Cami, Cami... please stop crying."
- " Bu..but I want Vic!"
- " Are you sick? Does something hurt? Tell me, let's talk, stop crying, please " that sounded desperate.
- " My stomach hurts " damn, she looks like Victoria when she pouts...
- " Can I pick you up?"
- " Why?"
- " To show you what can relieve that pain."
- " Okay."
- With her little voice, she accepted my request, and extended her arms for me to pick her up. She's light, lighter than I expected, her eyes are green, like Noel and Hank's, none of them look like my Victoria, mine...
- " Why are you smiling? " this girl doesn't miss a thing.
- " I'm thinking about Victoria."
- " I also smile when I think about her."
- " That's very good."
- I carry her straight to the kitchen, sit her at the table, and then place in front of her a huge red gelatin, which I suppose is strawberry or some red fruit. It's full of gummy bears, as soon as I put the bowl in front of her, a huge smile of happiness appeared on her face and I couldn't help but feel relieved.
- I watch her eat amused, she delights in every bear she rescues. Damn, she's happy, she's going to eat the whole gelatin, I don't think that's good...
- " Cami, do you want a sandwich?"
- " No, I just want to eat red gelatin, it's very red, right? " how can she be so fascinated by a simple plate of gelatin?
- " Enough is enough " how do I take it away from her?
- " Why are you scolding me, Mr. R? " oh no, she's going to cry.
- " You can't eat so much gelatin."
- " But I like it!"
- " Enough is enough, you have to put on your shoes."
- " No!"
- And she jumps down and runs out, wow, being dramatic from a young age. How much longer is Noel going to take? I can't stand this for much longer, I have no patience for this, I have no patience, period.
- ```
- Why am I doing this? Damn, I don't have time for these childish games, I have a mountain of work to do, and since I don't trust anyone, I end up doing everything myself. It's been 30 damn minutes wandering around the house looking for Cami without much effort, there's no sound, not even my footsteps, I start to think that maybe I should have asked Kim to stay with her, but no, since I want to take advantage of this, I did it myself. This is Victoria's fault, for getting under my skin... Although, thinking about it, this is nothing compared to everything I would do for her if necessary.
- Suddenly a giggle brings me out of my thoughts, I found her! I pick her up on my shoulder and take her straight to the room where her things are, she tries to escape but I hold her on my shoulder, while with my free hand I look for her socks and pick up her slippers from the floor.
- "I don't want to wear shoes, I don't want to," she shakes her head repeatedly.
- "It's a shame, in my house EVERYONE must wear them, it's rude Cami, are you rude?"
- "No, my daddy says I'm a lady," she smiles proudly.
- "Good, then you're going to join me for dinner."
- "Jelly?"
- "Food."
- "Jelly!" she shouts frustrated.
- "That's enough, miss, dinner and that's it."
- She's pouting, I can feel her little body contracting and seconds later she's crying again, what a spoiled brat this girl is. Ignoring her tantrum, I take her back to the kitchen, sit her at the table and put on her slippers, and I must say that it's the hardest thing I've done in a long time, it took me 15 minutes... I hope Victoria's kids aren't this spoiled... WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! Damn, this girl confuses me. Well, dinner, yes, that will keep her busy, at least for 15 minutes. I hope.

- "Good, then you will accompany me to dinner"
- "Jelly?"
- " she doesn't give up easily"
- "Food"
- "Jelly!"
- "That's enough, young lady, dinner it is. She's pouting, I can feel her little body contracting and seconds later she's crying again, what a spoiled girl this is. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! Damn, this girl confuses me. Well, dinner, yes, that will keep her busy... at least for 15 minutes... I hope. I leave her at the table and head to the oven, as I take out both plates I can't stop looking back, if she escapes again I refuse to go after her. Fortunately, I think the smell of the food has piqued her curiosity. Once again, Kim has proven to know how to cook for children, she has left her a turkey sandwich with some vegetables and a very tiny portion of fries, hoping she won't reject it I leave it in front of her and a cry of excitement comes out of her lips as she dives for the fries. Relieved, yes, relieved, I take my plate and sit in front of her, it's strange, I had never had dinner in the kitchen. Cami makes noise while eating. She hums a song happily while eating, it's a relief, I don't know how much more of this "taking care of her" I can handle without making her cry. I don't know how to deal with children, that's for sure"
- "I want that from your plate, Mr. R"
- " she points with her little index finger towards my salmon "But it's my plate
- " I have to admit that seeing that tiny frown starting to amuse me..."
