Chapter 8

  • Heaving a long sigh, Adam exited Calvin’s room and proceeded to his own bedroom. He took out his phone from his pocket and decided to call Oliver. He needed someone to talk to before he went crazy.
  • Oliver picked up immediately as if expecting his best friend’s call. “Hi, Mate,”
  • “Ollie,” Adam said, then sighed, not even knowing how to begin the conversation.
  • “You sound troubled. What’s going on?” Oliver asked, getting worried.
  • “The nanny Jessica got for us arrived some minutes ago.”
  • “Okay, don’t you all like her? Jess assured me that she had good records. She’s great with kids.”
  • “That’s not the point, Oliver. She’s meant to be my Children’s nanny but She turned out to be someone that I never thought I would see again in my life.”
  • “I’m confused, Adam. Who the hell is she?”
  • “Katherine!”
  • Things were silent between the duo for a while until Oliver’s voice came through.
  • “What????”
  • “I know, so unbelievable!!!” Adam mumbled, running a hand over his face.
  • “Dude, are you sure it’s really Katherine? I mean, She’s from a well-to-do family. Why is she a Nanny?” Oliver asked, confused as fuck.
  • “I honestly have no idea, Oliver. Nothing is making sense to me right now. What’s making me lose my mind is the fact that She’s denying her identity. I hope I don’t go crazy soon.”
  • “Denying her Identity?” Oliver reiterated.
  • “I was more than shocked to see her at my door but she looked so normal. Like She never knew me, like we didn’t have a past together. I called her Katherine but She said her name was Helen.”
  • “Helen? Adam, are you sure She’s Katherine because she could just be her lookalike.” Ollie said, worry evident in his voice.
  • “I’m so damn sure She is my Kara. Even though it’s been years since I saw her, I dream of her almost every night so I can’t go wrong with recognizing her. Her voice, her laugh, her smile, they are just as I remembered them to be.”
  • “I have a lot of things to explain to her, I need answers as to the baby and how she ended up with a nanny job, I need to beg for her forgiveness but how will I even do any of that when She claims that she has no idea who I am.”
  • “So far she’s getting along with the kids but she has been strictly professional with me. I tried searching her eyes for any emotions but found nothing. Ollie, we had great chemistry between us. How can she say she had never seen me before in her life?”
  • “Please, calm down, Adam.” Oliver persuaded.
  • “I am, Ollie. Trust me, I am. I just can’t help but be frustrated about everything. I looked for her, remember? I paid people to find her but no luck. If it wasn’t for Jessica who helped with hiring her, I would have said She purposely came back to my life for some sort of revenge.”
  • “We are literally going to be living under the same roof. How am I going to cope with all of these?”
  • “Please, take it easy, Adam. Jessica has only heard about Katherine. She had no idea what your first love looked like so She would not have known. That being said, maybe all of this is a coincidence. I know staying calm right now is like the most difficult thing to do but please try to control yourself.”
  • “If you’re certain that She’s Katherine Gold, then you need to be patient. You’ve done nothing but search for her your whole life and now that She’s under your roof, the last thing you would want is to scare her away.”
  • “I’m sure there’s more to all of these. I’m sure there’s a valid reason as to why she keeps denying her identity and I know you will find out the reason as time goes on. I understand you feel like getting answers right now but I’m afraid that won’t work so just be patient.”
  • “Don’t you trust her with the kids? You think she would do something to them?” Oliver couldn’t help but ask.
  • “I don’t know. But I don’t think so. As far as I remember, Kara had never been a fan of violence or revenge. But with everything I put her through, I honestly have no idea if she is still the same person I knew years ago. But I think if she wants revenge, She will take it up on me and not my children.”
  • “So far, Calvin and Anna seem to like her.”
  • “So you think She’s pretending not to know you?”
  • “Yes! She behaved as if our paths never crossed. Ollie, you know how I’ve always felt about Kara, you know she’s my life, how I’ve never stopped thinking about her even though it’s been years.” Adam said, running his fingers through his hair furiously.
  • “I’ve thought severally about what would happen if our paths were to cross again and her reaction was definitely not what I was expecting. Maybe I would have felt better if she hit me and called me all sorts of names. Her keeping quiet, telling me She doesn’t know who I am is making me go fucking insane.”
  • “I know how frustrating this is for you, but I believe you will find answers soon.”
  • “You’re persistent and strong-headed so I’m sure you’ll get your answers soon. Just please control your temper so you won’t complicate things.” Oliver advised.
  • “Thanks. I’ll keep all that you’ve said in mind.”
  • “I have to go. Will talk to you later.”
  • Adam said goodbye to his best friend, then ended the call.
  • Going back downstairs, He didn’t see Kara and his children so he assumed that they were still upstairs. He went to the bar corner and poured himself a glass of scotch which he gulped down in bits. He was done with his drink by the time they all came downstairs.
  • “Daddy, Helen is so funny. She told me a really funny story while taking my bath.” Calvin said with smiles all over his face as he approached Adam in his pajamas.
  • Adam nodded with a small smile and he ruffled the little boy’s hair.
  • With Anna in her arms, looking all cleaned up, Helen went over to where her luggage was, opened the zipper of the outer area and took out a big brown envelope. She approached Adam and handed it over to him, with their hands unknowingly brushing each other, sending shivers down Adam’s spine.
  • He was about to say something when Helen politely interrupted.
  • “You can go through them while I make dinner for them.” She said, then turned her attention to Calvin, “Come, love, Let’s get you something to eat.”
  • The little boy nodded and instantly held onto Helen’s hand. Then they exited the living room.
  • Adam let out a loud sigh the moment they were out of sight. He felt some sort of connection when their skin came in contact. But looking at her, it was as if She didn’t feel anything and that crushed his heart.
  • Pouring himself one more glass of scotch, Adam proceeded to the home office to review the document.
  • He carefully went through every detail and the last piece of papers he came across contained a couple of Helen’s personal information, including the good references from her previous employers.
  • “What the fuck??!!!” Adam cursed as he went through the details. What was in the papers were totally different from every damn thing he knew about her,
  • Not convinced by what he just read, Adam reached for his phone, went to his contact page, located the contact he was looking for, and dialed the number immediately.
