Chapter 5

  • Adam Sleeves opened his eyes at exactly 6:10 am. No matter how late he slept, he was used to waking up early. Looking to his left-hand side, he saw that Anna and Calvin were still fast asleep. He felt Anna’s forehead with his palm and instantly heaved a sigh of relief when he didn’t feel any temperature. His plan was to take her to the hospital today if the temperature persisted but now that She was okay, going to the hospital was off their to-do list.
  • Gently getting up from the bed, Adam reached for his laptop, cellphone and made his way over to the sofa on the other side of the room. Once settled, he spent the first forty minutes going through his emails and replying to them, after which he started searching for reliable agencies for nannies. Not finding anything impressive, He picked up his phone and dialed Oliver who picked up after a few rings.
  • “Adam Sleeves is calling this early. Today must be good!” Oliver’s voice came through.
  • “I need your help, bro!” Adam said to the other side. “Tessie fired Martha so I’m on the lookout for a new nanny.”
  • “Again??? What the hell is wrong with her? What did she say was Martha’s offense this time around?”
  • “Tessie is a maniac. I’m sure Martha did nothing wrong, She even accused me of fucking Martha. Calvin told me Tessie hit her too.”
  • “Everything is just so messed up. I know how much struggle I went through before I got Martha. The other reliable agencies we use said they won’t give us their staff anymore because of how horrible Tessie treats them. I have to travel next week and I cannot leave the kids alone with Tessie.”
  • Adam could hear Oliver sigh.
  • “I just finished searching online and so far I found nothing. We’ve exhausted all the reputable agencies. I called to know if Jessica can recommend someone or an agency. I want someone I can trust with my kids. As you know, I’m always busy with work and the least I can do for Anna and Calvin is to get someone that loves them as their own”
  • “I’ll talk to Jessica. How urgently do you need the person?”
  • “As soon as possible, Mate. You know I don’t know much about kids. I promise not to let Tessie hurt the new nanny. I’ve set some ground rules for Tessie and she dare not disobey them. I also don’t mind giving the nanny whatever amount she requests as long as she’s going to treat my children well.”
  • “Alright. I’m sure Jessie will be able to find someone. So I guess you won’t be going to work today?”
  • “No. Anna had a fever last night. I had to call the pediatrician and she told me what to do to make her feel better. She’s okay now though. I just want to monitor her for the day. Calvin needs a haircut too so I’ll be taking him to do that today.”
  • “He must be so happy.” Oliver mumbled.
  • “He is. He couldn’t believe it when I told him I would be taking him for a haircut. He was so happy that I felt so guilty. Guilty that I do not spend enough time with them.”
  • “I can imagine. But I’m glad you will be spending time with them today. You all should have fun. I will talk to Jessica now.”
  • “Thanks, man. Let me know how it goes.” Adam said, ending the call.
  • He was able to do some work on his laptop for five minutes after which he heard Anna whimper. He closed his MacBook, put it aside, then went over to the bed. His little girl was wide awake.
  • Adam’s heart melted when she smiled at him.
  • “Good morning, Princess.” He smiled, picking her up and kissing her left cheek.
  • “Did you sleep well?” He asked Anna who blabbered some incoherent words to him in return.
  • Adam chuckled. “I will take that as a YES!”
  • He played with Anna some more until Calvin woke up.
  • “Good morning, Daddy!” He mumbled, rubbing the back of his palm against his eyes.
  • “Morning, buddy. Slept well?”
  • Calvin nodded.
  • He kissed the little boy on the forehead.
  • Soon enough, Calvin started playing with his little sister on the bed. Adam couldn’t help with the smile on his face as he watched them both.
  • “Oppsss, I think she’s hungry, Daddy,” Calvin said when Anna started whining. “It’s time to give her some milk.”
  • “Okay, buddy. Let’s go to the kitchen.” Adam said, picking Anna up.
  • While Calvin occupied himself with some morning cartoons, Adam made milk for his daughter. He fed and burped her when she was done.
  • Adam took both kids to their rooms, had their baths for them, and dressed them up. He took them back to the living room and turned on the Tv for them. While Anna and Calvin watched some cartoons, Adam took a shower and changed into a casual outfit.
  • Getting to the living room, he took Anna out of her playpen, he held Calvin in his other hand and led them out of the house.
  • After buckling them up in their different car seats, Adam made his way to the driver’s seat, got settled, then drove towards one of the best restaurants in town where they all had breakfast.
  • From the restaurant, they all went to a barber salon to get Calvin’s hair done, after which they proceeded to the mall where they got a couple of things including snacks and Ice cream.
  • Getting back home, Anna was sleepy so Adam put her in for a nap. While the little girl had some rest, Adam bonded with Calvin in the living room upstairs. They had snacks together while watching Calvin’s favorite cartoon. The duo made plenty of conversations in between.
  • At around 1:30 pm, Adam’s phone rang. “I’ll be right back, champ!” He said to Calvin, rising to his feet, with his eyes on his phone. Once Adam was a few steps away from the living room, he answered the call.
