Chapter 7 You’re Not Just The Clown, But The Whole Circus

  • This lottery system seemed pretty similar to the lotteries in many online games. He had reason to believe that there were great things to be drawn in this ‘other’ area—even the legendary suit that he had used on his character when he used to play online games in college was drawn from a lottery!
  • There is only one chance. Heavens, I ask for your blessing, Christopher silently prayed.
  • Gulping, he pressed the ‘draw’ button at once.
  • Whoosh!
  • The roulette began to turn and at the same time, Christopher's heart was beating like a drum in his chest. His breathing became rapid and his palms started to sweat.
  • Those few seconds felt like years to Christopher. He swore in his twenty-plus years of living that he had never felt as nervous as he did right then.
  • As the roulette began to slow down, he knew the results were about to come up. In an instant, he held his breath.
  • Please!
  • It was hard to say if it was because Christopher’s life seemed too miserable after he was broken up with and unemployed within a day, but even the Goddess of Luck couldn’t stand to see such misfortune anymore. His eyes watched expectantly as the pointer landed on the smallest pie on the wheel—right on the ‘other’ category.
  • Ding!
  • The familiar robotic voice rang in Christopher’s ears again. Immediately, he heard the voice saying, “Congratulations, host, for obtaining the right to use the Legend-level knife skill ‘Dual Wielding’ for 60 minutes!"
  • Soon after, a ray of light shone out from the phone screen and shone directly into Christopher’s eyes…
  • Right then, in the kitchen, more than ten minutes had passed since Hayden started carving—more and more ice shavings littered the floor beneath him, meaning that he was all the closer to completing his ice toad. The limbs and complexion were clearly carved—not only the shape of it but also the expression of the ice toad could be seen! It was no wonder that his ice toad was praised by old chef Miller; this sculpture was indeed exquisite.
  • Is there a need to continue watching this? Absolutely not! Everyone present thought so.
  • However, it was when all of them thought that Christopher had completely given up that he, who had been using his phone all this while, began to move all of a sudden.
  • Immediately, he drew two long knives from the knife holder, holding them in both his hands at the same time as he then swiftly swung the knives in front of his block of ice.
  • Just like an experienced swordsman who was practicing some incredible sword technique, he dazzled everyone with his carving technique!
  • “Dual Wielding! It’s the Dual Wielding skill!” After seeing Christopher’s movements clearly, a savvy man with a relatively square face said in shock, “Christopher knows the Dual Wielding technique!”
  • “Wait, what is Dual Wielding?” At this time, a cute waitress who didn't seem to know what happened, asked in a low voice, “Does that mean he is good?”
  • “Better than good!” The square-faced man replied, filled with emotions, “Have you seen ‘The Legend of Condor Heroes’? If so, you should know about Zhou Botong's ‘Left and Right Inter-fighting’. Christopher’s ‘Dual Wielding’ is equivalent to this skill in the culinary world!”
  • The square-faced chef said clearly to the waitress but she didn’t seem to believe his words. Instead, she merely curled her mouth into a frown and rolled her eyes at him.
  • What Left and Right Inter-fighting?
  • Does it have to be so mysterious? She thought.
  • Knowing what the cute waitress was probably thinking, the square-faced chef smiled and continued, "Don’t underestimate this skill. It is harder to learn than you think! The culinary world probably resembles the world of martial arts the most. Despite having schools and clans, they are specialized in different skills as well. Take the knife skill as an example; there are the Dragon Waltz, the Celestial Sonata Technique Style, and the Heaven-Splitting Cleave among others. There are no less than a hundred different kinds of knife skills that can be named, which are considered more well-known, and there are many more! Christopher’s Dual Wielding skill is considered one of these, and it is similar to the divine ‘Nine Yin Scriptures’!”
  • “Tsk, tsk, tsk. Christopher of all people knowing the Dual Wielding skill is the last thing I could have expected.”
  • Even a spectator could see that Christopher was using the Dual Wielding Technique, so Hayden naturally noticed it too. Right then, his facial expression turned stiff instantly—as if he had eaten something bad.
  • The longer one worked as a chef, the more they knew how crucial it was for a chef to focus and concentrate on one thing. However, for the Dual Wielding skill, it required the chef to do two things simultaneously!
  • When he was young, Hayden also did try to practice this specific knife skill, but due to his lack of talent, he had no choice but to give up. Now that Christopher was displaying it so skillfully in front of him, how could he not be surprised?
  • Besides, the more advanced the skills were, the more time it took the practitioner to hone them. Not to mention showing it in front of people, even just achieving some progress would take no less than ten to twenty years of practice.
  • Christopher was only a little over twenty years old and he could already use the Dual Wielding skill so skillfully. How is this even possible?
  • Don’t tell me that he had started playing with a knife ever since he was in his mother's womb?
  • This doesn’t make sense!
  • Besides, if Christopher really did know Dual Wielding in the first place, then why did he remain as a mere helper for the past three years?
  • Could it be that he was faking everything?
  • Why would he?
  • Gah! I just can’t figure it out!
  • Hayden had a thousand questions running in his mind, but he couldn’t afford to think about them that much anymore—the most important thing right now was to carve out the ice toad.
  • After a round of carving, retouching, and finishing, Hayden splashed a bucket of cold water on the ice sculpture to wash away the remaining ice shavings—an exquisite toad appeared in front of everyone.
  • Hayden completed his sculpture!
  • At the very same moment, Christoper, too, slammed his double knives on the chopping board and finished his sculpture as well.
  • Not even taking into account the quality of the finished product, Hayden didn’t seem to have any advantages even in terms of speed.
  • Gobsmacked would be the word to describe Hayden’s expression right then. He never would have expected Christopher to finish so fast since he only picked up the knife more than ten minutes after Hayden did!
  • “You!” Hayden hissed through his clenched jaw.
  • Even then, he didn’t think he would lose despite the Dual Wielding skill being legendary, as he was still very confident about his skill and his ice toad.
  • “Let me have a look at what you’ve carved!”
  • After a slight pause, Hayden looked up at Christopher’s work. As soon as he took a look, he laughed—he laughed until tears were welling up in his eyes and to the point where he couldn’t catch his breath anymore.
  • What a joke! And here Hayden thought this mere kitchen porter who dared to challenge him had managed to carve something amazing.
  • It turned out to be a bumpy… egg?
  • Yes. No doubt; it was an egg!
  • That outline, and that arc!
  • Isn't it just an egg?
  • If not an egg, what else could it be? Hayden couldn’t imagine it being anything else. Goodness, if you were going to sculpt an egg, then you should have done it properly. What’s with the pits on the surface? At this point, you’re not just the clown, but the whole circus.
