Chapter 22

• By break the next day I was walking down the halls of the junior students' area with Annabel Reed and Jake Newman to what they called the “Newspaper Office.”
• It was Friday and my Fridays are pretty uneventful. I had an English class in the morning then a free period then a cooking class and then another free period while Charlie marched off to the Woodwork class. She’s pretty handy and she’s good at construction. I’m not one for all that so I chose cooking class instead and finished two hours ahead of Charlie. Just as I was thinking of what to do with my life Annabel marched into my class and wiggled her fingers at me. No one say no to the head girl so I followed her to Jake’s class where she wiggled her fingers at him too and announced that we would be having a committee meeting that morning. So we walked together to the newsroom where she said the other members of the committee were waiting.
• I had expected a room with cramped space and equipment taking every free space in it, a seedy room with a dusty smell and cardboard across the front door with the letters ”Newsroom” written across it but that was far from what I saw when we got to the so-called newsroom. First of all the door was made of glass but the kind of glass you couldn’t see through, across the front of this was a metal plate which read “Edwin and Co. Newsroom. Silence please.” The doorknob was glass as expected. When Annabel open the door the first thing that hit me was the cold air from the 2 air conditioners placed at either side of a room that was painted white and beige. The colors of the room were very professional and business-like. Suddenly the soft hum of printing machines and computers wafted through my ears, the air fairly buzzed with the sounds and those sounds seemed to be coming from behind the closed doors at both sides of us. The doors were labeled “Printing room.”
