Chapter 34

• Morvienne's heart kept pounding so hard it felt like it might tear out of her chest. She stood still in the center of the room, fear crawling through her veins. Her hands shook uncontrollably, so she brought them together, rubbing her fingers against each other, and twisting them to try and stop the trembling. But of course, it didn't work, instead, she just got more afraid, especially when Sevrin stepped closer.
• When the back of his hand lifted toward her cheek, she turned her face away, her body reacting on pure instinct, although it didn't stop him. His fingers followed her movement, reaching her cheek anyway.
• He caressed it slowly, and deliberately, making her body stiffen and her stomach turn. Her eyes filled instantly, tears gathering no matter how hard she tried to hold them back.
