Chapter 11 Something's Off
- Back at Rosetown, Wallace stood quietly under the streetlamp as he pondered. Quinton's clearly pretending not to recognize me on the phone. Something is definitely off.
- "D*mn it." Wallace suddenly realized something and cursed himself. He had been so focused on contacting Quinton that he had overlooked their current situation.
- He made a name for himself at a young age by stepping over others, hence making countless enemies over the years.
- After disappearing for six years, those enemies would certainly not remain idle. They might have already changed the power dynamics in Northville, perhaps even the whole of Danton.
- The more Wallace thought about it, the more alarmed he became. Quinton was undoubtedly very strong as the leader of his own security team. But for him to intentionally distance himself from Wallace was a sign of how formidable their enemies had become.
- "Wallace!"
- At that moment, a bright voice broke his reverie. He turned to see Sandra walking toward him in high heels. Following closely behind her was Austin, who had a disgruntled expression.
- After parting ways earlier, Sandra had a bad feeling that Wallace might be in trouble. So, she excused herself from the guests at the banquet and left with Austin.
- She was convinced her gut was right when she saw Wallace standing alone on the roadside. "Wallace, are you alright? Didn't Frankie offer to send you home?" she asked anxiously as she started to check him for any signs of injuries.
- "Sandra, I told you he would be fine. Why did you have to come looking for him?" Austin grumbled.
- "You don't understand. Wallace not only embarrassed Lucas in public but also thwarted Zachary's plans. Given their nature, they may retaliate against Wallace on his way home. It was my fault Wallace ended up like this six years ago. If anything happens to him today, I'll never forgive myself," she stated solemnly.
- It was then Austin grasped the seriousness of the situation after witnessing the gravity in her expression.
- However, he voiced his concern, "Sandra, wouldn't Mr. Sandler be even angrier if he finds out you came to see Wallace?"
- "I don't care. As long as Wallace and I are still married, I won't just stand by and watch him get bullied," Sandra replied without hesitation.
- Austin frowned. He felt she was being too naive as there was little they could do if Zachary decided to retaliate against Wallace.
- "Alright." In the end, Austin took a deep breath and said through clenched teeth, "Sandra, I promise I'll do my best to protect you both. But just know that if things go out of hand, I won't save Wallace. Don't put it on me."
- Wallace was touched as he listened to their conversation. He finally understood why they came after him. Then, he urged, "Let's get in the car."
- To avoid any unexpected circumstances, Sandra bid farewell and joined Wallace and Austin in a white Audi A6.
- However, a man appeared as soon as the car drove away. He watched the Audi leave and sent a message, 'Sandra and her brother are sending that fool home.'
- No one spoke during the drive with Sandra appearing to be focused on driving, but her palms were actually sweaty.
- Despite Rosetown's thriving pharmaceutical industry, martial arts also held prominence. Austin, for instance, had been practicing martial arts since young.
- And this made her worry for Wallace's safety. After all, Zachary was known for being petty and vindictive despite his refined and chivalrous appearance.
- "Sandra, are you very nervous?" Suddenly, Wallace asked from the back seat.
- She glanced at him through the rearview mirror and questioned, "You still haven't answered me. Didn't Frankie send someone to take you home? Why were you standing alone by the street?"
- "Gerald was about to send me back, but we bumped into Lucas in the alley. They seemed to have something to talk about, so I left," he replied casually.
- Screech!
- Sandra slammed on the brakes and stopped the car on the side of the road upon hearing that. Austin was equally shocked and looked at Wallace. He patted Wallace down and asked in disbelief, "Did they not hit you?"
- Sandra and Austin were well aware of Lucas' and Gerald's personalities. If Wallace had really been taken to the alley behind the hotel, there was no way he could have escaped unscathed.
- "Why would they hit me?" Wallace feigned ignorance.
- Austin's mouth twitched as he thought to himself. Because you deserve it.
- Sandra broke into a cold sweat. She was grateful that she had brought Austin along to follow after Wallace. Although she didn't understand why Lucas and Gerald didn't take action in the alley, she knew that Wallace would have been injured if they had been a bit later.
- "These guys are getting bolder!" Sandra exclaimed angrily as she punched the steering wheel in frustration.
- "Don't worry, Sandra. Gerald and Lucas are losers. I can take on ten of them," Austin said confidently.
- "I'm not worried about them. I'm more worried about Zachary," she said gravely.
- Austin's smile vanished upon hearing Zachary's name as well. Although he was confident in himself, he wasn't certain if he could handle Zachary's revenge. After all, the Sandler family is powerful enough and can wipe out our family like a breeze.
- Wallace glanced at them and said with a smile, "Austin, you don't need to worry about me. Just protect your sister."
- "Of course, I'll protect Sandra first if there's danger. I don't care about you," Austin retorted.
- Wallace's mouth twitched. But he sensed something out of the blue, and his expression turned cold when he was about to reply.
- A few seconds later, Austin noticed something and checked in the rearview mirror. A black SUV was parked 30 feet away from them, and five burly men got out of the car and headed straight for them.
- "Sandra, drive!" Austin urged anxiously.
- Startled, she tried starting the car, but her anxiety made it difficult. Her pretty face turned pale as she shouted, "Wallace, run!"
- Wallace sighed in his heart. It wasn't that he didn't want to fight, but he was worried that revealing his skills would attract unwanted attention.
- So, after nodding his head, he turned to Austin and said, "Remember what you just said. Protect Sandra."
- Then, he jumped out of the car and sprinted toward a secluded path.
