Chapter 5 Miraculous
- The room was so silent that one could hear a pin drop. Everyone was stunned by the scene unfolding before them.
- The head of the Swift family, Joshua, was looking for Wallace, the soon-to-be-divorced foolish son-in-law. He respectfully addressed Wallace as "Mr. Fender."
- Not only were the Williams family members shocked, but even Wallace was puzzled. He was pretty sure he didn't know Joshua.
- "Mr. Williams, is Mr. Fender your son-in-law?" Seeing no one responding, Joshua asked again.
- Suddenly, Douglas snapped back to reality. He never imagined that Joshua's grand visit was actually for Wallace. Douglas wondered whether his family’s chance to align with the influential Swift family depended on Wallace.
- "Mr. Swift, there… there he is." Douglas stammered and pointed at Wallace.
- Joshua turned to look. His eyes immediately lit up as he smiled warmly. "Mr. Fender, I'm Joshua from the Swift Group. I am here to visit you and would like to invite you to my home for a discussion."
- Everyone gasped in disbelief. Joshua was the head of the prominent Swift family, a major figure in the business world. And he was showing such respect to Wallace?
- Amidst their astonishment, Wallace looked calmly at Joshua without uttering a word.
- Even though Joshua was a big shot in Rosetown and held a distinguished status, he was nothing more than an ant in Wallace’s eyes.
- Wallace had once reigned over Northville and earned the title of Emperor Fender at a young age. This rank was equivalent to that of a national leader, which placed immense power and wealth at his fingertips.
- "Mr. Fender, please... don't refuse." As Wallace remained silent, Joshua felt some inner annoyance but continued to smile outwardly.
- "Wallace, you should go with Mr. Swift," Sandra said and tugged at his sleeve.
- Uncertain if he would comprehend, she was pleasantly surprised when he smiled warmly and said, "Sure, I'll listen to you."
- "You..." Her gaze widened as she beheld his unexpectedly gentle demeanor. Though she harbored questions, observing the two's imminent departure, she stifled her curiosity. She hastily asked, "Mr. Swift, may I ask what you need Wallace for?"
- "There are some things on which I needed his help. Anyway, thanks for your assistance. We should definitely get together more often in the future," Joshua replied with a smile.
- Sandra mustered her courage and said, "Mr. Swift, Wallace doesn't know anything. If he offends you in any way, please don't take it to heart."
- "Miss Williams, rest assured. I'll make sure he returns safe and sound," he assured her and gestured toward Wallace.
- Witnessing the scene, James couldn't restrain his curiosity. He quickly stepped forward and asked, "Wallace, when did you meet Mr. Swift?"
- Wallace glanced at him. "Just now."
- Everyone was surprised by his response.
- Then, Wallace followed Joshua into a black Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
- Once settled inside, Joshua's tone turned serious. "I've come to you today because we have a bit of trouble and could really use your help."
- Though he had harbored doubts about Wallace's status as the legendary doctor, Martin's unwavering endorsement instilled full trust in Joshua. This conviction led him to personally appease.
- Wallace maintained his characteristic silence. He seldom engaged in idle chatter except with Sandra.
- Joshua waited for a moment before asking patiently, "You must be quite skilled in medicine, right?"
- "I know a bit." Wallace glanced at him and nodded.
- "I really hope you can save my daughter. She's been suffering from some strange illness these past two years, and it's getting worse. Although our family knows a bit about medicine too, sometimes you just need an expert's help." Joshua's tone was urgent, almost pleading.
- "I'm not interested. If there's nothing else, I'll be on my way." Wallace's expression was indifferent. He wasn't keen on playing doctor for someone.
- "Please, Mr. Fender. They say doctors have a compassionate heart. You can't just turn a blind eye to someone in need," Joshua pleaded.
- "Why should I help you?" Wallace smirked coldly.
- A doctor's compassionate heart? He wasn't just a doctor. While capable of saving lives, he also possessed the power to end them. It was this dual nature that earned him respect among rival leaders from other countries.
- "Well..." Joshua faltered. After some thought, he hastily added, "Whatever you desire, just name it."
- Wallace hesitated and was initially inclined to decline. However, thoughts of Sandra's family's evident struggles weighed heavily on his mind. With a sigh, he acknowledged that regardless of their future, Sandra had devoted six years of her life to him. Even in the event of divorce, he recognized the debt he owed her.
- With these thoughts in mind, he said, "If you can, please take good care of the Williams family."
- "Sure." Joshua's expression lit up, and he placed a hand over his heart as he pledged.
- Wallace closed his eyes and chose not to speak further.
- Joshua glanced at Wallace and still felt a lingering unease. Wallace didn't even ask about the illness, and he agreed. He pondered if Wallace's medical expertise was that impressive.
- "Mr. Fender, how confident are you in curing my daughter?" Joshua couldn't help but ask eventually.
- "If I can't do it, then your family should start preparing for the worst." Wallace didn't even lift an eyelid.
- "You!" Joshua's face reddened with anger. He hadn't anticipated Wallace's harsh words. However, driven by the urgent need to cure his beloved daughter, Joshua managed to keep his temper in check.
- …
- As the leading pharmaceutical company in Rosetown, the Swift family naturally displayed their wealth. They purchased a large plot of land and constructed a sprawling estate on it.
- Within the estate, a grand artificial lake sparkled with emerald hues and surrounded by intricate rock formations.
- As they pulled up in front of the Swift Estate, Joshua gestured for Wallace to exit the vehicle.
- "There's plenty of water, but the mountains aren't enough to control it," Wallace murmured suddenly.
- Joshua was taken aback and surprised by Wallace's comment. His estate had been meticulously arranged by a geomancer hired by Gareth at a high price. But Wallace's words hinted at some geomancy issues.
- "Mr. Fender, do you happen to know about geomancy?" Joshua asked.
- "After experiencing a lot, one tends to pick things up," Wallace replied casually.
- Joshua didn't press further on the topic, but his opinion of Wallace rose a notch.
- Soon, they entered the grand foyer.
- "Who is my dad chatting with?" As soon as he stepped inside, Joshua heard the laughter in the courtyard and asked the housekeeper.
- "Mr. Joshua, it's Mr. Howard," the housekeeper quickly replied.
- Joshua nodded and then invited Wallace into the courtyard.
- Inside the pavilion in the courtyard, an elderly man with a rosy complexion was engaged in a lively conversation with a middle-aged man across from him. Their interaction appeared quite harmonious.
- "Dad," Joshua greeted as he walked over, addressing the elderly man, Gareth Swift.
- "You're back." Gareth smiled and nodded.
- "Joshua, who's this?" Joshua's younger brother, Howard Swift, glanced at Wallace and frowned.
- "This is Mr. Fender, whom I've specially invited to treat Rachel," Joshua replied indifferently. He seemed unimpressed by Howard.
- "Are you kidding? This kid is still young, and you're letting him treat her?" Howard scoffed.
- He added, "I think you better not act recklessly out of desperation. Today, I've brought Mr. Lynch, a renowned doctor from Seastone, specifically to treat Rachel." He smiled and gestured toward the courtyard behind him.
- Joshua was surprised. The doctor his brother had invited was a well-known doctor. Joshua had tried to invite him previously but had been unsuccessful. Now, Howard had seized the opportunity.
- "Howard, let's not forget our manners. All guests are treated with respect. Young man, please don't take offense," Gareth said to Wallace and appeared amiable.
- At that moment, an elderly man in his sixties emerged from the courtyard behind them and pushed a wheelchair forward. Seated in the chair was a slender young woman. Her face possessed beauty marred by a pallid complexion. She was occasionally interrupted by fits of coughing and showed signs of distress.
- The elderly man, Mikael Lynch, nodded at the group and said, "I've completed a thorough examination of Miss Swift and confirmed that she's suffering from tuberculosis."
- He added, "While this condition is not uncommon, it will exacerbate her condition and pose a significant risk of contagion if it is not treated soon."
- Upon hearing that, Howard couldn't help but praise, "Mr. Lynch, you truly are a master of alternative medicine."
- However, Joshua frowned and turned to Wallace. "Mr. Fender, would you like to have a look as well?"
- "Joshua, what's the point of having him examine again?" Howard said dismissively. He added, "Mr. Lynch has already checked everything out. He'll have a treatment ready in no time."
- He shot a mocking glance at Wallace. But Joshua ignored his brother and kept his eyes fixed on Wallace.
- Wallace glanced briefly at Rachel before turning his attention back. Just as he was about to speak, Mikael smiled and said, "Don't worry. Since I'm here, I'll make sure Miss Swift gets better." He continued, "Before coming, Mr. Howard described her condition to me in detail, so I came prepared." He confidently pulled a small porcelain bottle from his medical kit and handed it to her. "You can take the medicine now."
- "Okay." She nodded and took the bottle.
- "What kind of medicine is this?" Wallace asked with a frown.
- "It's specifically for treating tuberculosis," Mikael replied with a slight hint of disdain. He couldn't believe a young upstart like Wallace dared to question him.
- "If she takes that medicine, it will be a miracle if she could celebrate her 20th birthday."
- Wallace's statements made Rachel's hands tremble, and she almost dropped the bottle.
