Chapter 14 A True Savior

  • Everyone turned to look at Wallace upon hearing those words. Even Sandra couldn't help but wonder, Is he going to save Austin?
  • The Williams family had always maintained a strict household. No one would speak up when Douglas was about to administer punishment. However, Wallace had the audacity to intervene.
  • With everyone staring at him, Wallace spoke calmly, "We can't put the blame on Austin in this matter. If he hadn't done anything, Sandra would have been in danger. If you must, put the blame on me instead."
  • Surprised, Austin's eyes widened. Wallace might be a fool, but he would genuinely step up in times of trouble.
  • "Have you thought this through?" Douglas stared coldly at Wallace.
  • Today's series of unfortunate events weighed heavily on the Williams family. Not only had the engagement with the Sandler family fallen through, but the partnership had also been canceled.
  • Furthermore, Zachary had made it clear that the Sandler family would be the best partner for the Swift family. Thus, the Williams family found themselves in an awkward position. All this chaos had been caused by Wallace, the fool standing before them.
  • If it weren't for the ripped divorce agreement and the one-day grace period given, Douglas would have already kicked Wallace out of the house.
  • Wallace was about to speak, but he was interrupted by James. "Dad, would it be appropriate to deal with Wallace like family? He isn't part of the Williams, is he?"
  • Am I not part of the Williams family? Wallace felt a pang of bitterness in his heart. After six years, he had only sat at the same table with them on his wedding day. Since then, his status was not even on part with a servant.
  • "Wallace, this has nothing to do with you. Get out of my way now." Austin signaled to Wallace with his eyes.
  • Wallace shook his head. "I'm not looking for trouble. Austin is way too young to be punished to death."
  • Everyone was taken aback. Even Sandra couldn't help but smile wryly. Austin's expression darkened as he said, "My father won't kill me. He just wants to give me a lesson, that's all."
  • "Get out of here!" Douglas finally lost his patience and shouted.
  • "If you genuinely don't want Austin to die, why did you coat the stick with so much poison?" Wallace pointed to the stick in Douglas' hand, puzzled.
  • Suddenly, Douglas' eyes narrowed.
  • Austin also approached the stick, examining it closely. There is a noticeable difference in color at the tip of the stick. If it was indeed poison and used to punish me…
  • The thought made him even more frightened. He trembled involuntarily, his scalp tingling. The room fell silent, and everyone held their breath. After a meticulous inspection, Douglas glared at Frankie with a grim expression.
  • Thud!
  • Frankie's complexion paled in fear as he dropped to his knees. "Master, this has nothing to do with me. This stick has always been in the living room, untouched by anyone."
  • Austin was the sole male heir of Douglas' lineage. Despite Douglas' constant reprimands, it was obvious that Austin was his favorite.
  • However, someone had been scheming to harm Austin! The toxin had been applied to the stick in advance. The perpetrator clearly understood Douglas' family dynamics, as that stick was intended for Austin.
  • "Wallace!" James suddenly shouted angrily, fixing his gaze on Wallace and demanding, "Why didn't any of us detect the poison on the stick, but you did?"
  • As soon as these words were spoken, all eyes turned suspiciously toward Wallace. If Wallace hadn't mentioned it just now, no one would have noticed anything unusual.
  • "Wallace, care to explain?" Sharon sneered, adding, "I'm puzzled. How did you spot something that no one else noticed at first glance? If you claim this has nothing to do with you, I won't believe it for a second."
  • In response to Sharon and James' accusations, Wallace considered them fools and retorted, "Can't you see the color at the tip of the stick has clearly changed? Are you all blind?"
  • Silence enveloped the room. Wallace's actions today were entirely uncharacteristic. First, he gained favor with the Swift family, then he tore up the divorce agreement, and now he had the audacity to publicly insult Sharon and James.
  • How audacious of him!
  • "You!" James was so furious that his face turned red, trembling as he pointed at Wallace. However, he turned speechless. If Wallace hadn't pointed out the poison on the stick earlier, Austin would have been in grave danger.
  • "All of these happened because of you!" Sharon coldly snorted. "Wallace, we demand an explanation!"
  • "Quiet!" Douglas' stern voice pierced through the room, restoring the silence in the room. After giving Wallace a penetrating glare, he shifted his gaze towards Frankie, whose knees remained on the ground. "You have one day to find out what happened, or you will take all the blame!"
  • "Yes." Frankie felt a sense of relief. He swiftly made his way out after taking a bow. His back was drenched in cold sweat. If anything happened to Austin, I would be the first to bear the blame!
  • "Alright, you may all go now." Douglas wearily waved his hand. The others exchanged glances and quietly exited.
  • After everyone departed from the room, Douglas slumped onto the couch. The clash between Austin and Zachary had thrown the Williams family into chaos. It was certain that the Sandler family would retaliate against the Williams family soon.
  • The Williams family was already teetering on the brink of collapse. If they encountered reprisals from the Sandler family, Douglas' position as the family head would be in jeopardy. Per Williams' customs, the most competent person would take over as the family leader.
  • "Douglas." The only one left in the room, Yvonne had not seen her husband so despondent in a long time. She spoke cautiously, "Didn't Joshua say that he would continue the partnership with us?"
  • "Enough." Douglas sighed, cutting her off. "Did you not hear what Zachary said? The Swift family was only going to collaborate with the Sandler family. Did you really think Joshua would want to work with Wallace?"
  • Yvonne fell silent.
  • Meanwhile, Sandra had already accompanied Wallace back to their villa. The Williams family estate wasn't just a single structure but comprised five buildings constructed adjacent to each other. One was occupied by the family patriarch, while another housed Douglas and his wife. Sandra and Wallace had their own dwelling, and the remaining two were owned by Alan.
  • Upon entering their villa, Sandra sank onto the couch on the ground floor living room, her exhaustion evident on her beautiful face illuminated by dim lighting. Over the past six years, she had borne numerous burdens. Despite objections from her family, she had married Wallace, a decision that had made them the gossip of Rosetown.
  • Yet, what troubled her most was the current plight of the Williams family. To survive, they intended to pressure her into marrying Zachary. Sandra felt a pang in her chest, tears welling up in her eyes.
  • Lost in her thoughts, Sandra was suddenly greeted by the aroma of noodles. Wiping away her tears, she turned to see Wallace delicately holding a bowl of noodles, approaching her with a smile. "It's your birthday. Since you haven't eaten dinner, I thought I'd make you a bowl of noodles," Wallace said, placing the bowl and utensils in front of Sandra on the coffee table.
  • Touched by the gesture, Sandra gave Wallace a grateful look before picking up the bowl and cutleries to start eating.
  • Slurp!
  • With the first bite, her taste buds ignited. Despite being a humble bowl of noodles, its flawless appearance, aroma, and taste could compete with that of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Before long, she devoured the ample serving and released a contented belch.
  • Observing this, Wallace affectionately wiped the greasy stain from her lips and asked, "How was it?"
  • "It was delicious! The best egg noodles I've ever had!" Sandra exclaimed with delight. Impressed, she added, "Wallace, were you previously a chef?"
  • Wallace chuckled. "This bowl of noodles is your second birthday gift from me."
  • Taken aback by the gesture, Sandra remembered the earlier event at the hotel when Wallace tore up the divorce papers and wished her a happy birthday. Curious, she asked, "Is there another gift?"
  • "Of course," Wallace replied with conviction. "I promised an equal partnership between the Swift family and the Williams family, and I will work to make the Williams family even stronger in your name."
  • Sandra was left speechless as Wallace's determination caught her by surprise. Today, Wallace's words and actions have defied everyone's expectations.
  • "Have you… really recovered?" She sought reassurance.
  • Wallace chuckled at Sandra's surprised expression. He was aware that Sandra had carried the weight of his past errors for six years, evident in their marriage of convenience.
  • "Yes, I have," Wallace affirmed sincerely.
  • A glimmer of hope sparkled in Sandra's eyes, mingled with disbelief. Wallace has indeed recovered!
  • As excitement bubbled within her, she stood up and walked back and forth in the room. Suddenly struck by a thought, she approached Wallace, locking eyes with him as she asked, "Do you remember what happened in the past six years?"
  • "I remember everything." Wallace nodded, a smile playing on his lips.
  • Sandra probed further with curiosity, "What was your most memorable memory?"
  • A mischievous sparkle danced in Wallace's eyes as he feigned contemplation before answering, "Maybe it was when you requested me to fetch you a fresh set of clothes while you were showering?"
