• “Datu’s lawyer is here. He wants to meet with us. I’ve sent him up. Would you be comfortable being there to hear what he wants to say?” I said to Perlah, trying not to leave her out of something like that, whatever the outcome might be.
• “Why wouldn’t I be comfortable? Do you know what he wants?” she asked, and I shook my head, uncertain about it as I proceeded to change out of the tear-stained shirt I was wearing into something more inviting.
