Chapter 7 His Efforts

  • The following morning, in the chairman's office of Bellridge Group, Boris Hill was telling Emmanuel, “Mr. Kirsch, thank you for agreeing to join Bellridge Group. I believe we'll become the top company in Chanaea with your efforts.”
  • He gave Emmanuel a polite bow.
  • Emmanuel gave a curt nod and tossed the contract to Boris. “I won't sign this contract for now. I don't want to be the chairman of Bellridge Group. However, you can hire me to be Bellridge Group's CEO.”
  • “Of course.” Boris was surprised, but he quickly agreed to it. It was great news to him.
  • He knew Emmanuel was a big shot, but he didn't know the latter's exact identity in Chanaea.
  • Yesterday, he offered Bellridge Group's shares without hesitation to get into Emmanuel's good books and to get the company some protection.
  • It didn't matter what Emmanuel's position was in Bellridge Group, for his presence alone could benefit the company.
  • “However, our company already has a CEO. Mr. Kirsch, the employees will be upset if I were to fire him right now. Why don't I make you both CEOs? You both will have the same power. How does that sound?”
  • There was no way Boris would fire his current CEO, who had contributed greatly to the company. He wasn't that ungrateful a man.
  • “No problem. Let's talk about Eleanor Cabot now.”
  • “That hasn't slipped my mind. She can be the vice director of the sales department. If you think that isn't enough, I don't mind hiring her to be the director,” Boris suggested as he observed Emmanuel's expression.
  • The director of a department?
  • Hearing that, Freddie was displeased. He let out a cough to signal Boris that Eleanor deserved a more important position.
  • Getting his hint immediately, Boris added, “If that doesn't work, what position do you think suits her the most, Mr. Kirsch?”
  • A smile flitted across Emmanuel's lips as he read Eleanor's resume. “She should start from the bottom. After graduating from university, she hasn't accomplished anything. She has no experience, but her reputation is already marred by stains. No one will hire her. No one will listen to her if she gets hired as a director. Arrange for her to get interviewed now. She has two choices—join the sales department or work as the CEO's assistant. Prepare two contracts for her. As the CEO's assistant, she will have to sign a five-year contract with an annual salary of five hundred thousand. As an executive in the sales department, she will have to achieve an eighty million sales target within two years before she is free to leave. She isn't allowed to resign from Bellridge Group before attaining that target. If she insists on leaving, she will have to fork out fifty million in compensation.”
  • Boris was confused. “What? Isn't that too much?”
  • Initially, he thought Eleanor was under Emmanuel's protection. However, it seemed that they were mortal enemies.
  • Eighty million sales target within two years? How the f*ck is that possible? The best salespeople in various industries in Summerbank can only achieve a maximum of thirty million within two years. Why is he making things difficult for Eleanor? That's so cruel of him.
  • “Don't ask questions and get to work. After making the arrangements, give me the contract for the sales executive position.”
  • Emmanuel's gaze had turned frosty, causing a chill to go down Boris' spine. The latter immediately fled the chairman's office to get things done.
  • He was the chairman of the company but feared his own CEO. That was sad, but he couldn't afford to offend the man who could protect him.
  • He had to do this for the sake of his company's development.
  • “Boss, what are you doing? You came back to make it up to her, not make things difficult for her!” Freddie, who was an emotional softie, slammed the table and glared at Emmanuel.
  • Emmanuel glanced at his comrade, who had gone through many life-and-death situations over the years with him. He couldn't help but chuckle out loud. “Freddie, come and take a look at Eleanor's resume. Aside from the fact that she smokes and drinks a lot, she was sent to jail three times five years ago. She only received a verbal warning, but those incidents were stated in her record. She's also temperamental. She used to suffer from depression and nearly jumped off a building to end her life. To many, she's a madwoman. If it wasn't for us, do you think Bellridge Group would hire someone like her?”
  • After a pause, he added, “Her resume is full of stains, not achievements. She won't survive for long in society as she lacks the necessary skills. I don't want her to end up like that. Instead, I want to groom her to become the best entrepreneur in Chanaea. That's how I make it up to her. Even if we cannot be together, I hope she can be a successful entrepreneur instead of becoming the target of gossip. I don't mind if she refuses to forgive me, but she's Eva's mother. I want only the best for her.”
  • As Emmanuel grew increasingly emotional, Freddie gave a slow nod.
  • “Boss, I get it now. You had good intentions.”
  • “Not really.” Emmanuel leaned back in his chair and stared at the sun in the sky outside the window. Calmly, he added, “I ruined her dancing career, but I want to make her a legendary entrepreneur. Is eighty million within two years a lot? That's just the beginning.”
  • An adorable bear mascot was giving out pamphlets to the passers-by on Jucksford Street. The mascot's lovable looks managed to speed up its work.
  • In less than two hours, Eleanor managed to finish handing out one thousand pamphlets.
  • Nevertheless, she was drenched in sweat due to the sweltering weather. Her cheeks were red when she removed the headpiece.
  • “Here is your pay.” A woman came over and gave Eleanor two hundred.
  • Sitting on the curb, Eleanor flashed a smile and took the money. “Thanks a lot!”
  • “Come again tomorrow,” the woman said before turning to leave.
  • Eleanor put her hard-earned money into her pocket. She sipped on some water as she stared at the high-rise buildings ahead.
  • Envy and longing flashed across her eyes. She would die to get a job in any of the high-rise buildings.
  • Alas, no company would hire her. She had no choice but to earn a living on the streets and in small enterprises.
  • Is this how I'm going to live the rest of my life?
  • Ding! Her phone's notification sounded, indicating she received a text.
  • She clicked into it and realized it was a text informing her that Brilliant Media Company's finance department had deposited three thousand into her account. Delight flashed across her face.
  • I thought I won't be able to get the money back. I can't believe Sparkee transferred the money honestly. It's a miracle! Lady luck is on my side!
  • Soon, her phone rang again with a phone call from Bellridge Group's HR department.
  • “Hello, is this Ms. Eleanor Cabot? After reading the resume you sent us, we are interested in hiring you. Thus, we prepared two positions for you to choose from. One is a sales executive in the sales department, and the other is the CEO's assistant. Can you come for an interview?”
  • The CEO's assistant?
  • Eleanor's eyes lit up when she heard about the job position. She had always wanted to work as a CEO's assistant as she could learn many things from a company's CEO. At once, she nodded and replied, “Sure. I can attend the interview now. Thank you.”
