Chapter 7 Booked

  • People tend to get caught up into something which they really like. Well, at least at the beginning. Because you know what’s the reality? In the end, you love those things you don’t like.
  • I wasn’t aware of what’s ahead of me. I badly need the money. I badly need something that can provide to make ends meet. I didn’t like what I just called my sell, a surrogate? It’s basically giving up my youth just so I can surpass my so called ‘youth’.
  • This was my desperate move, but him acting like that on that night reminded me to get a hold of my self. That yes, I needed the money but I should not go down that low. So I decided to do this.
  • I checked my phone thinking that somebody might have been texted me but there’s nothing. After I talked to Molly, it kinda felt like a tiny thorn had been removed inside of me. It makes me feel at ease knowing that my best friend knows it now. I thought she’ll say anything or preach me or anything but she just stayed silent and told me that she’ll talk to me in person once she’s free. And I appreciate her for that. Sometimes you just need people who listens to you, no words needed… just knowing that they’ll always be there for you no matter what.
  • I sighed and tried to stay positive for I’ll be needing a lot of courage applying for this work. I once again checked my phone hoping for a message but nothing appeared. I don’t even know why I’m doing this. Oh God, who am I waiting for?
  • ”I’m… currently in college. And I badly need this job because I need to pay for my bills.” I uttered. I arrived here in a Spanish Restaurant. I saw on their ads that they are looking for workers and I think I’m fit to what they’re looking for.
  • The bearded super visor of the restaurant narrowed his eyes while looking at me. He looked at my resume and back to me. The stick of cigarette between his lips is well lit and I think the smell of it had stayed on my clothes and I’m not liking it. But still I smiled and answered his questions politely.
  • I waited for him to reply while he’s scanning my resume and I’m actually confident about this. Because I had put a good background on my resume, though I don’t have any experience when it comes to working.
  • ”You don’t have any experience, lady.” His accent fired looking at me. His wrinkles are more defined now that I’m looking at him intently. I bit my lips without thinking. My heart beat went a little fast thinking what he’ll say next.
  • “Uhm… yes sir. But, I’’m willing to learn and I’m a fast learner too.” I convinced him more.
  • He just looked at me and he got his cigarette using his fingers. I caught a little when he blew a ball of smoke. I gulped nervously when I stole his attention because of that.
  • ”We have someone on the counter now.” he said. My eyes widened a little.
  • ”I … really need this Mister.”
  • ”Get out.” he simple uttered.
  • I snapped and stood up. “Please, mister. Uhm…” I dug my mind for more ideas and suggestions. Should I just leave? But, I need this. The money that I have is not enough to provide for my needs and my bills.
  • ”I told you already!” His accent became more scary in my ears.
  • ”Any job, mister. Please.” I almost beg.
  • He looked at me with piercing eyes. “Cleaner… waitress… anything sir. Please,” I persuaded him more. And so that night I walked through the night with a mixture of a light and heavy heart.
  • “Ahh!” I sighed loudly because my feet are hurting from walking. I looked at the cars that are passing by, I couldn’t even afford my own ride. I have to walk my ass home because I’m broke as fuck.
  • I sat into the gutter to rest a bit and check my toes because they are badly aching. I sighed loudly again and stare at the absence. The streets are lighted by the vehicles that are passing. I fell again into some flash backs. Beside the thought that we did something on his car, I can’t help but to think how comfortable his life was.
  • His car is one of the latest models, his clothes are flattened and look so expensive. He is one of these people. Who doesn’t need some walking… I rolled my eyes inside my mind. Why am I even thinking about him all of a sudden?
  • Well, if my conscience would try to reason out. I think it’s just because I haven’t heard anything from hims since that night. He said that before he impregnate me he need to get me through some checking because he wanted to make sure that I’m clean before I do him. I am quite offended, well to be honest I’m hurt but now I realize that I’m just not used with this kind of set up. I think I really need to go through some medical check ups because it’s their policy. I don’t really know.
  • And so maybe that’s the reason why I’m always trying to look for his messages on my inbox because I just want to know what I need to do since I’ve spent the money he had gave me now. It’s been days and I didn’t receive any ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ from him.
  • My phone vibrated from my shoulder bag and I immediately went back to my senses. I dig through my messy things and I don’t know why I’m suddenly excited. My hands are a bit shaking while I flipped my phone only to find out that the call is not from the person I’m looking forward to.
  • I sighed in disappointment. What? Disappointment of what?
  • I swiped ‘answer’ and talked, “Enoch,”
  • ”Angel,” he uttered my name with his deep voice and I smiled a bit. I craned my neck to the side so I can hold my phone between my ears and shoulders because I was fixing my shoes that I had removed a while ago.
  • ”How are you?” I asked him and stood up.
  • ”Are you kidding me? I should be the one asking you that. How are you? Why are you not answering my calls and messages, the worry in his voice is evident.
  • ”I’m just a bit busy because of the coming finals. Don’t worry. How about Ms. Perry? Your dad…” I asked more, Ms. Perr and Mr. Wilson are his parents. They are the ones who adopted me and helped me all through out my life since the day I can still remember.
  • ”They are fine, of course. Still hustling for the pharmaceutical. You know how much they caught up with some problems regarding some investors.” I plumped my lips hearing him.
  • They are a family of business. They own a pharmaceutical manufacturing company which manufactures medicines that I don’t know. They are the ones who have knowledge about those things.
  • “I’m sorry about that.. How about you?”
  • Enoch is their only son. He’d been there for me since I was a child, we basically grew up together even he’s a bit older than me. I moved out when I became legal. And now, even we’re separated he still doesn’t miss to call me or ask me about my whereabouts. Enoch is a bit of a mad child growing up, I didn’t liked him at first but I treat him as my own sibling and a friend. Thinking about it now, I think we are just immature that time. We’re good now.
  • “Fine as hell,” he chuckled. “Are you at your dorm? Should I pick you up? Let’s have some dinner or…”
  • “Uhm, no!” I answered - cut him. He didn’t answer me but I can feel his confusion.
  • I left the dorm and that’s the least thing I want to happen as of the moment. Now that he had mentioned that they’re family is having problems with the company which I know for a long time now. I don’t want be a burden to them anymore.
  • “No it’s just… I’m a bit busy and… I want to rest.”
  • “Are you sure?”, he asked.
  • “Yes.”
  • “Alright. I respect that. Let’s meet some other time then.”
  • And we talked a bit more and as I ended the call I haven’t realized that it’s almost late at night but I haven’t still arrived at my apartment. I looked up unto the sky and sighed again. My lid are getting heavy because of tiredness.
  • As I walk more into the side of the road a four wheel suddenly pulled right where I’m at. I blinked and stopped for a moment. The window opened and the man behind wheels is straight looking at me.
  • “Angel Davis?”
  • My brows furrowed.
  • ”Uhm, yeah?” I answered with a question because obviously I don’t know what’s the matter.
  • He unlocked the door.
  • “Car service.” he said without any thought.
  • “Car service? I didn’t book for one.”
  • The driver’s face turned a bit irritated because of my answer. It seems like he’s still gonna say something but he just got his phone and showed the screen to me.
  • “See. You paid for it already. Near Huston University right?” he confirmed.
  • I got more confused and stared at the screen. What the hell is this? Is this some kidnapping shit?
  • “Get in miss. I need to hustle.” the driver.
  • I fidget as he look mad and in a hurry and so I had no choice but to get inside the car. Inside, I still wonder what’s happening. And how the hell I got in here, I thought it was some sort of crime and such but as I step into my apartment I got light headed.
  • Whoever booked that deserves a warm embrace and my special latte.
