Chapter 6 Black Eyes

  • Her eyes, dark as the most fearsome night, bore into him, causing him the worst sense of dread. They seemed to pierce him through the opposing eyes. The woman's hoarse, hostile voice matched her dark, cold aura perfectly. It seemed that his body was blocked and did not react, that he was only paralysed by fear.
  • The woman's words repeated like a broken record in his brain, processing, trying not to panic. He didn't understand why Rebekah didn't scream, just stood still.
  • He heard his father's call, it was time to go. His footsteps sounded as he approached. The clatter of debris, warning him.
  • No one will have my diary. - He stressed every word to her before just disappearing quickly.
  • Elijah stared at an unfixed spot in that cemetery. He felt someone in front of him patting his cheeks, hearing him call out to him, but it was like a whisper to him.
  • "Elijah, son," it was his father. He looked up at him at last, blinking. "What's wrong with you? You look pale. Walk, Rebekah is in the car, she took him by the hand practically dragging him, it seemed that his feet had no strength. "Okay," he said as he got into the car and headed down the road, "What's wrong with you," he asked his son again, who was just staring blankly, "Orleans... What...?
  • " I saw her," he said and his father frowned at him. " I saw Melia.
  • "What?" he asked, activating the windscreen, it was raining hard. " Cut the crap, who knows what you saw, you're cold. Rebekah.... What? Oh, listen to the music. " She said as she saw him in the rear-view mirror. But she noticed him and her son were restless, uneasy. What had they seen that made them look scared? she wondered. But, she wouldn't give any credence to what her son said. You're talking about a person over two thousand years old. It was absurd. " Damn," he muttered, wiping a small cloth on the window of the car, it was getting damp and it didn't let him see. The rain was increasing and Josh only slowed down, he remembered what his beloved wife told him: Keep the speed between lanes low. "We're almost there. " He noticed his son writing quickly in his notebook. " What are you writing?
  • " ... His gaze was like the finest barbs, his tone of voice was hostile, dark, seemingly malicious. " He read. "He had the strength of three great men coming together to strike someone. " He felt his hands trembling, abruptly closed his notebook, clutching his seat tighter. " Father, you have to believe me.
  • " Is what you read what you saw? Or, was it just your own phrases?
  • "What I saw," he answered, and Josh rolled his eyes, letting out a sigh. "I swear.
  • " Listen, Elijah, cut the crap, okay," he asked in a serious tone, "You're so into it that you think you're seeing someone who's already dead.
  • " He's not! "He bellowed, "Ask Rebekah, she saw her, just like me.
  • " I'm not going to ask her anything. And I say this and I say no more, this business with that woman, it's over.
  • Elijah threw a tantrum that caused his father to scold him and start an argument. He was sick of it, he never thought his son would be so obsessed with the subject.
  • " Shut up, we're on the road," Rebekah suddenly bellowed, "Shut up, we're on the road. Shut your mouths. " She snapped, returning to her music. Josh and Elijah looked at each other with tense jaws.
  • This would cost them their father.
  • Long drive, it was a long way home. Josh with his eyes fixed on the road noticed how suddenly the car jerked as if it had stepped on someone's foot. He shouted and pulled over to the side of the road.
  • " Wait here," he asked before getting out into the rain. He closed the hatch.
  • Inside the car, Elijah was restless, he didn't see his father and Rebekah didn't see him either.
  • " Did you tell him," she asked and he nodded. " Did he believe you?
  • " No," he answered, "And why don't you cooperate," he tried to see out the window as much as he could. "Whatever. " He said opening the door and through the rain, he went out.
  • Rebekah and Elijah noticed their father squatting down and changing one of the tyres.
  • " You never listen to me. "Josh said as he watched Elijah pass him one of the tools. " I don't know how the tyre got damaged like that. It looks like an animal got its claws deep into it. " He laughed lightly. " Nonsense. "He stood next to his son, pulling out his mobile phone and calling for the tow truck to come. " They're coming. " When he hung up, he said, "In ten or five minutes.
  • The three of them got into the car, waiting for them to arrive. Josh called his wife to let her know he would be a little late and there, they just lapsed into silence.
  • In the rain...
