Chapter 4 How About A Day Among The Ruins?

  • With music blaring, Josh, Rebekah and Elijah were heading towards the outskirts of London. Elijah was very excited and a little restless, he wanted to get there fast, he wanted to know everything.
  • His father stopped to ask which was the shortest way, and when another driver answered his question, he drove on until they arrived. They looked out of the window, for the sign was still intact:
  • °FALLEN°.
  • It was the only thing still standing in the rubble. They got out of the car. When they stopped in front of what used to be the cemetery, two officers on duty told them they were not allowed to enter.
  • Elijah saw his plans crumble like the entrance to Jumanji itself, and his father took notice.
  • Josh took the floor.
  • "Officer Ed, I'll be just a moment," he said to the white-skinned officer in front of him. "My son," he pointed to Elijah, "just wants to do a little research for his history homework.
  • "Everyone here wants to do a little digging. But you can't," he said again. It's in ruins and it's dangerous.
  • "Listen," said Elias, "I'll only be a moment, it's for an assignment. I can't lose this note. I don't know if you understand me, have you ever had to study? "He wouldn't give up, he had to go in because he was going in. "Please?
  • Both officers looked at each other for a moment and the officer, surnamed Hanks, spoke.
  • " You only have ten minutes," he said and Elijah thanked him. " Come with me," he said, leading them to the back, where a huge rusted grille, when opened, gave them passage.
  • Elijah was already inside, taking notes and photographs like a researcher. Rebekah and her father were watching him, thinking this was what his life would be like. He had to hurry because it was late, it was getting close to night and, according to the agents, it was dangerous.
  • "Son," his father shouted and turned around. "I think you'll want to see this.
  • He ran to his father, following him to where he was going. And when he got there, he exclaimed with joy and a smile, dropping to his knees and brushing the sand off what would be the gravestone he was looking for.
  • "Melia Conkinova," he huffed and brushed the sand off the headstone, which was barely standing. " At last," he said with a chuckle, taking some pictures.
  • "That's odd," said Rebekah. " said Rebekah, who was standing next to him. There's no beginning or end date to her life, why?
  • " This girl, my dear friend," said Elias, tossing some stones aside, "is the girl whose secrets everyone wants to know. It is unlikely to know when she was born or died; the books, her history, neither the writers know it, nor he who seeks her knows it. How can we know it? Never! she exclaimed in reply. - But I found her gravestone. " She smiled, infecting the girl and her father.
  • " I'll be right back," Josh said as one of the agents asked for the time.
  • "Good," Rebekah said. " You got what you need, let's go.
  • "No, of course I don't. "He replied, pulling a large stone from the centre of the tombstone. "I need that journal.
  • "No shit, Elijah. You can't take it, it's not yours.
  • The man turned a deaf ear to his words. He wanted that diary, he wanted to read it and he wanted to know how good or bad his thoughts were, his life, his history, his her.
  • With his hands and a small stick he tried to remove a large piece of rubble that prevented him from opening the grave, which was only shallow. It seemed strange to both of them.
  • Elias looked across to where his father was chatting with the officers, he was very good at being sociable and it gave him time to get what he wanted.
  • When he opened the tomb wide, his smile slowly faded. He furrowed his brow and in a low voice:
  • "But what the... Shit," he looked into the tomb, moving some stones. "There's nothing," he looked at Rebekah, who shrugged.
  • The tomb was empty. There were only big rats looking for something to eat. He was annoyed, seemed angry that he couldn't find anything.
  • "It wasn't supposed to be here. "He looked around for another gravestone, or maybe the grave, with the movements of the earth itself, was somewhere else.
  • But in the darkness he could not search, the night gave its presence. It was late.
  • Rebekah stroked his back, trying to cheer him up. The journal was gone, and she wasn't there.
  • It made sense, they were talking about someone over two thousand years old.
  • " But if the tombstone's there, where's the damn journal," Elijah shouted, kicking at some debris. " I need that diary.
  • " Not everything is in the rubble. " Said a voice behind them.
  • They looked at each other and turned to him.
  • " Looking for this?
  • You need ....
