  • “Rex, wait! I’m trying to tell you, Ajax and I just looked around town, we watched that drama unfold near the blacksmith’s, nothing else!” My words tumbled out, desperate to explain, to make him understand. But his jaw was set, a rigid line of barely contained fury, and his grip on my arm was unyielding. He wasn’t listening. His eyes, were fixed on some unseen point beyond my explanations. The air around him crackled with a possessive energy that was both terrifying and undeniably alluring.
  • Before I could even gather another breath to continue my futile protest, he scooped me up. One arm went under my knees, the other around my back, lifting me effortlessly as if I weighed no more than a feather. A gasp escaped my lips, but it was lost as he stalked down the long, torch-lit corridor, the scent I couldn't just explain – his scent – overwhelming my senses. My hands instinctively clutched at his shirt, the coarse fabric rough against my palms.
