- Another morning arrived, signaling the day every graduating student had to prepare for the masquerade ball that night. Emily lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her body unwilling to move. She had never been one for grand celebrations, least of all those that demanded gowns, dazzling accessories, and forced conversations. If attendance were not required for graduation, she would have ignored the event altogether.
- She sighed and rolled onto her side, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on her. The biggest issue was that she needed a gown, but spending money on something she would wear for only a few hours felt ridiculous. She hated unnecessary expenses, especially when they held no meaning for her. However, Stanley Connor had invited her, and she had agreed to be his date. Whether she cared for the ball or not, she had to be considerate. She could not drag him into her disinterest.
