• The basement air was thick with tension, heavy and suffocating. Emily’s heart pounded violently in her chest as the two men inched forward, ready to strike. Her body tensed, every instinct screaming to flee but there was nowhere to run.
• “Warren is coming back,” Emily said quickly, desperation sharpening her voice. “How are you guys going to explain if he sees me wounded, Nancy? And I will tell him it’s all because of you.” Her eyes flicked to Nancy’s, searching for any hesitation.
• For the first time, Emily saw it. Nancy’s perfectly controlled expression wavered. Her lips tightened. Her hands stilled for a brief moment on the armrests of her chair. Her brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of uncertainty flashing in her cold eyes. Emily smirked just enough to notice it.
