- Tension still clung tightly to my chest when I entered the living room again later that evening. I was dressed, and so was Erin, who sat on the couch pretending to be busy with her hands, perhaps to keep Nate from bothering her.
- Everyone was in the living room except Andrea when I joined them. Nate was by the bar, a glass of brandy in his hand. I could tell by the way the amber liquid clung to the glass, forming slow-moving legs, that it was something potent. The night hadn’t even begun yet. He was at the bar, a glass in his hands. Scotch, maybe. His eyes met mine, and he smirked, raising the glass at me. I had caught him staring at Erin, and I could have sworn it was regret or longing I glimpsed in those eyes.
