• A flicker of fear crossed his thoughts. Jacqueline had been on her own while he had come for her hand in marriage. She had no circle of relatives, nobody to support her. The thought of her suffering somewhere, probably without any help, gnawed at him. Despite his harsh decision, a part of him still cared about her well-being.
