• “Anna,” she began softly, “I recognize matters were tough between us. But I hope you can see that I’m here to help, not to hurt anyone.”
• Anna’s gaze softened slightly, but she didn’t reply at once. Finally, she sighed. “I nonetheless have my doubts, Jacqueline. But I can’t deny that you’ve helped the percent. For now, that’s sufficient.”
