Chapter 12 Our Marriage Has Always Been Fine

  • Lu Yao thought she was silly whenever she thought about what she did. A man who didn’t love her wouldn’t want any kids, so even if they had one, they wouldn’t have a complete family. When she thought of it that way, she was grateful for her failed plans.
  • “You might need more money, so here’s 2.5 million.’ Xiang Dongnan gave Lu Yao the check.
  • Lu Yao took it from him without going through all the drama. When she confirmed the amount, she took out a pen and paper to give Xiang Dongnan an IOU. “I’ll try my best to pay it back in a year, Dongnan.”
  • “This is nothing for me.” Xiang Dongnan pushed her hand back. “Besides, he’s my teacher.” He smiled. “Just pay me back when you can. I’m not in a hurry.”
  • “No. I’m not taking this money if you’re not taking the IOU.” Lu Yao gave the check back to Xiang Dongnan, adamant that he must take it, for refusal was not allowed.
  • Xiang Dongnan obliged by folding the IOU and putting it in his pocket. “I’ll be taking it then. No interest in this debt though.”
  • Lu Yao was going to protest, but Xiang Dongnan shut her up. “If you really want to do it,” he half-joked, “why don’t you teach Tiantian some words when you’re free? Take that as your interest payment. She doesn’t like going to her kindergarten.”
  • Lu Yao mulled it over before agreeing to it, “Sure, I used to be a top student after all.”
  • “Yeah. You were the province’s top who managed to get into Peking University.” Xiang Dongnan smiled too.
  • Lu Yao borrowed the money from Xiang Dongnan with gratitude. She was going to treat him to a good meal, but when they were leaving, Xiang Dongnan received a call from his company that asked him to go back. “Let’s have a meal together when we have time. I don’t think we can do it this time.”
  • “It’s fine. Go do your stuff if you’re busy.” Lu Yao could understand his situation.
  • After sending Xiang Dongnan and his daughter off, Lu Yao went to the market for grocery shopping before going back. When she came back, she saw—to her surprise—Shao Yunchen’s car, while the man was leaning beside it, his expression dark.
  • “Why are you here?” Lu Yao stood three feet away from him, regretting the fact that he gave him her mother’s address when she rented the unit for Mrs. Lu. I shouldn’t have given him that, she thought.
  • The storm on his face intensified after he turned around to look at Lu Yao. “Why did you pack your clothes?” He strode toward her. “Why aren’t you at home?” he interrogated her.
  • “That’s your home, and I don’t see the need to live there,” Lu Yao evaded a part of his questions as she answered. “Besides, my mom’s insomnia is worsening. I came here because it’s easier for me to take care of her.”
  • “Then what’s the matter with this?” Shao Yunchen raised the document that had the words ‘Divorce Agreement’ on its cover, feeling frustrated about it.
  • It was already noon when he was done with all his mountainous work of the company, forgetting that he needed to pick Lu Yao up.
  • He thought Lu Yao must have gone through the discharge paperwork herself and went home after her grocery shopping. But when he came home, he was greeted by a deafening silence.
  • When he noticed the empty table after entering the bedroom, he noticed that Lu Yao had packed everything belonging to her. She left nothing but two jackets in the closet and the divorce agreement on the bedside table which she had signed.
  • Panic inexplicably welled up within him, for he didn’t understand why Lu Yao did this. Everything went fine over the three years of marriage, didn't it?
  • He quickly called her, but perhaps she had blocked him, because nobody picked up the phone no matter how many times he called. He kicked the closet angrily as frustration bubbled up within him.
  • After calming down, Shao Yunchen remembered Lu Yao had given him her mother’s address when she said she was renting a home for her mother. He quickly rummaged through the drawers, dashing toward Mrs. Lu’s neighborhood after locating the slip. Even so, he didn’t know which floor Mrs. Lu was living in, so he waited downstairs.
  • “What you see is what you get.” Lu Yao glanced at the divorce agreement. “I want a divorce,” she said calmly.
  • “Lu Yao, why you…” Her calm demeanor frustrated Shao Yunchen even further, prompting him to grab her wrist, making the bag she was holding fall down, scattering the ingredients everywhere. “It hasn’t been four years yet! Why are you getting a divorce?”
  • “I’m tired! I don’t want to live like this!” Lu Yao finally went past her tipping point after a whole day of bottling up her anger and resentment. “So what if it hasn’t been four years?” She glared at him. “There’s no love between us! Divorce is the best choice for us!” Before Shao Yunchen could say anything, Lu Yao bellowed, “Have you ever loved me, Shao Yunchen?”
