Chapter 16 Impulsive Vow To An Enigmatic Husband

  • She usually didn’t carry her personal phone during work hours, and only put it in her pocket because it was almost time to leave. Why did it have to ring now? Cornelia was so nervous she could hardly breathe. She sneakily took out her phone and turned off the sound. But by accident, she saw the message was from her husband who had disappeared after they got married! However, Cornelia didn’t dare to look closely, she just turned off the screen and stood quietly. Luckily, Marcus didn’t make things difficult for her. “You guys can leave now.” Cornelia and Ben replied, “Yes,” and escaped the CEO’s office at lightning speed. Because Marcus had delayed her, Cornelia didn’t have time to check her personal phone and rushed straight to the airport. Zack and Abigail took her luggage and went to the airport to handle the baggage check–in. When she finally arrived, they hurriedly went through security together. They only had a few minutes left before boarding. Zack complained, “In the past month, how many days haven’t you worked overtime? Your boss is such a jerk!” After today’s events, Cornelia had become Marcus’s most loyal subordinate. She wouldn’t let anyone badmouth her boss. “Don’t talk about my boss like that, he’s the best boss in the world.” “Wow…” Abigail clicked her tongue a few times. “Nelly, you’re suddenly defending President Hartley so much. Is there some story between you two?”
  • Hearing this, Zack joined Abigail, and they both sniffed around Cornelia like little dogs. Cornelia shrank back, “Abby, Zack, what are you guys doing?” Abigail said, “We’re checking if you have any men’s scent on you.” Zack added, “No men’s scent, just a smell of medicine.” That’s when they noticed Cornelia’s burn. Abigail immediately put away her playful expression and asked seriously. “What happened to your burn? Did someone bully you?” Zack was even angrier, “Who’s the bastard that bullied you? I’ll kill him!” Cornelia was touched by their worry. She smiled, saying, “No need for help, I’ve already sent him to the police.” Since they’d keep asking, Cornelia told them everything that happened today. After listening, they both gained a bit of goodwill for her jerk boss. Instead of comforting her, they each held one of her hands to support her in their own way. ‘Sweetie, you’ve got a new text message…” Cornelia’s phone reminded her of another new message, so she took it out. There were over a dozen missed calls from unknown numbers. And two unread messages. The first one was sent over half an hour ago: “I’m Jeremy, the man you registered to marry a year ago. Come out and meet me. We need to talk about getting a divorce!” The second message just came in, “Where are you? Why aren’t you replying to me?” Zack and Abigail were right next to Comelia, and when they saw the message from that guy, they nervously grabbed her subconsciously, “Comelia…” They wanted to say something to comfort her, but they didn’t know what to say. That husband who disappeared after getting married reappeared a year later, only to ask for a divorce. And it was at a time when Comelia was being slandered. It was hard for them to believe that her husband didn’t file for divorce because he heard bad rumors about Cornelia. They still clearly remembered, when Cornelia was in trouble back then, that boy who once promised to protect her for a lifetime, proposed to break up with her with determination and indifference. That incident had a significant impact. Cornelia considered using legal means to protect herself, but the other party had many more people and even called the school, nearly getting Cornelia expelled. To continue her studies, Cornelia had to compromise with those people, and had to leave Rosenberg with a dejected look. It’s been several years now, and she still can’t go home. They accompanied Cornelia back to Riverton to deal with school affairs. That night, it was pouring rain, and that guy said he would pick them up at the airport. Upon hearing this, they were elated for Cornelia. Despite the general misunderstanding, at least one soul had opted to trust her. They came out of the airport and saw that guy, dressed in designer clothes with two bodyguards by his side.
  • They thought he was here to console Cornelia, but he said instead, “Cornelia, I know what you did back in our hometown. Our family can’t lose face like this. So, let’s break up. If we meet again in the future, please pretend you don’t know me.” After saying that, he didn’t even wait for Cornelia to say anything and turned to leave. Zack, furious, rushed over to give him a piece of his mind but was beaten up by his two bodyguards. At that time, Cornelia didn’t have any extreme reaction. She even smiled at his retreating figure and said “okay.” But Abigail and Zack knew that once back in the dorm, Cornelia would be in a daze all day, not eating or drinking, lonely and fragile. For a long time afterward, Cornelia couldn’t sleep peacefully, always waking up from nightmares. That guy then went abroad to study and never heard from again. The three of them never mentioned him again, as if he had never existed. But they knew that Cornelia’s agreement to marry a stranger for her grandma’s sake wasn’t just to ease her grandma’s worries. That guy who made her lose faith in love was also one of the reasons. Was she going to relive that pain this time?
