Chapter 20
- I descend the steps of St. José, my work bag slung over one shoulder and my hair pulled into a loose ponytail. The parking lot stretches ahead under the dimming evening sky. It’s fifteen minutes past seven, and my shift just ended. Right now, all I want is to go home, take a long shower, and binge-watch Seinfeld on Netflix—again.
- Monique texted earlier that she wouldn’t be coming home tonight—she’s at Dave’s place. I’m happy for her, truly, even though I still think she deserves better. But as long as he treats her right, maybe my opinion doesn’t matter.
- A hand on my shoulder stops me in my tracks. I flinch and turn around quickly, heart skipping. Doctor Sanders pulls his hand back instantly, raising both palms in mock surrender, a sheepish smile on his face.
