• Russia, far west. The mountain hollow looked like hell on earth—limbs strewn everywhere, blood splashing across the dirt. A few bearfolk lay sprawled in the gore too. Even so, the bearfolk still had the numbers. The only humans left alive were Michael Shephard and Anna. And even they were ringed in tight by a pack of bearfolk.
• Michael fought to his feet and gave a thin smile, eyes cold on the bearfolk chief. Beside him, Anna pushed herself up, trembling. The two of them looked like two people clinging to each other at the edge of the storm.
• Anna tried to gather the energy in her body, but not a spark would come. She shook her head. She knew popping a few elixirs from Michael wouldn’t do a thing now. She wasn’t low on energy—her energy was scrambled. What she needed was time to smooth it out.
