Chapter 65

  • They rolled up slow — tires crunchin’ the long gravel drive like the land itself was leanin’ in to hush the world for the new Walker. Sadie dozed soft in the passenger seat, Jesse curled tiny in her arms while Huckleberry huffed warm against her thigh from the floorboard, nose twitchin’ every time Jesse squeaked.
  • Beau parked crooked, didn’t care. Boots thunked the dirt when he stepped around, big hands slidin’ soft under Jesse’s blanket first — his boy, warm and perfect, fit right in the crook of his forearm like he’d been born for it.
  • Sadie cracked an eye open — grin split sleepy soft when she caught the way Beau stared down at Jesse like nothin’ else had ever made sense.
