Chapter 26 The Beta
- Lucas Reyes—no relation to the other Reyes on staff, a fact he delivered with the exhausted patience of a man who’d had to explain it a thousand times—was way less intimidating than Emily had expected. Based on everything Kael had mentioned over the last few weeks, she’d braced herself for someone a lot more intense.
- He was broad-shouldered with a buzz cut, builtn like a guy who’d spent his entire life being the biggest problem in any room he walked into. He greeted Emily in the Sub-Three break room by handing her a cup of coffee before she’d even fully sat down.
- "Heard a lot about you," he said, sliding into the chair across from her with an easy, relaxed confidence. "Mostly from Kael, who—and I say this with love—is spectacularly bad at describing anything emotional without making it sound like a medical diagnosis."
